Our fryer has been broken for quite some time. Reading "HEAT FAILURE". This was the replacement for tonight. That's an electric fryer propped up on the old one. Not secured in any way. This type of dangerous practice is very commonplace.
Secondly, tonight it was discovered the gas vavle to the fryer had been loose. The owner assured me it's no problem. For months me and my co-workers have had compounding health issues. I've taken the last week off to try to diagnose what's been going on. Feel much better.

I'm the only one freaking out over this. Am I crazy?

  1. Call the health department/inspector.

    Now.

    Loose gas valve?

    Explosions might happen.

    Tell that to your employer.

This isn’t a “fix it later” problem

this is a “if things go boom, you LITERALLY CANNOT WORK” problem.

    edit:

no. Bypass the employer. Health department. Department of labor. Tell them what’s going on, and your health problems.

Hot oil in an electric fryer balanced on upside down hotel pans? On the broken fryer?

If you can, walk out now and call the Health Department.

If that oil spills on someone, that is a life altering injury with years of treatment and pain management.

  3. Electric-Boogaloo-43

That fryer is at eye lever, super fucking dangerous, also it sitting on top of 2 trays!!! Like wtf! Call the health department right away.

  4. Dull-Gur314

So unsafe. I wouldn’t work until fixed. Thug it out with the one fryer

  5. WakingOwl1

Call the gas company and the fire Marshall about the loose gas valve. Fire Marshall might be the man for the fryer situation too.

  6. Tricky-Spread189

Gas poisoning? If the kitchen staff is getting sick at the same time there is a huge problem!

  7. vidasecreto

I’ve been blown up before. It’s not fun.

  8. alm0stengineer

Any cooking equipment (gas and electric)under the hood has to shut down if the ansul system dumps. If that’s plugged in somewhere else it’s not going to shut down.

  9. riles36912

Thankyou everyone! I will be getting in contact with the fire marshal and health department tomorrow morning!
I huge weight off my shoulder to have my kitchen staff at my back, as usual. Stay safe everyone!

  10. Yo! Some owners don’t know shit. Get out, get paid and move on. You don’t need to put yourself at risk for lazy ownership. I’m sure you can find a better restaurant with better ownership and management (most likely better pay). You matter and shouldn’t have to put up with lazy fixes… You don’t get paid enough to risk your body or your life. (This is coming from a dude who’s worked the industry for a 3rd of his life…)

  11. PerformanceCute9865

if you can pass the workcomp drug test id suggest an accident

  12. PurchaseTight3150

This should legally be considered domestic terrorism. I’m not even kidding.

  13. imnotwearingpantsru

Call the fire inspector. It’s probably not hooked into the automatic shot down for the ansul system.

  14. Cheffreychefington

Boy I’ve seen some ghetto ass unsafe shit in my day. This is fucking reckless disregard for anyones safety, I could imagine running into the cord and ripping the whole this down. Don’t even get me started on the gas valve situation, that’s actually worse. Shut this place down, this guy doesn’t deserve to employ people.

  15. Ignoring the gas valve because I just can’t even, but as someone who has been in a kitchen with deep fryers during an earthquake…that’s a no from me.

  16. demroidsbeitchn

I would also add that the shelf above the fryer is an accident waiting to happen. I personally received a couple stitches on my melon when the exhaust fan vibration knocked a stack of 6″ 1/6th pans off of a shelf (it actually was going to hit someone else and got swatted into my head). Falling into a fryer? No thanks.

  17. JunglyPep

The fryer sitting on those hotel pans is fucking crazy town. Like, the person who decides that was ok deserves prison time. That shit is so dangerous I’m seriously in awe. I’ve seen some dumb dangerous shit done in restaurants but this might be the worst I’ve ever seen by a wide margin.

  18. chefjeff1982

That’s CO poisoning, call everyone! 911, gas company, health inspector, labor lawyer!

  19. NegativeAccount

I bet the fire dept would love to hear about a leaking gas valve in a commercial kitchen

  20. That place needs to be shut down.

    Wrong on every level.

    Literally.

  21. Deep_Curve7564

You have some interesting mould growth and oil residue in the kitchen that I can see. Plus, what looks like exposed wood skirting, damaged floor surface and contaminated serviceware.
Do you have other pictures of the area, like under sinks, coolroom doors, exhaust systems, drains.
Potentially, your deteriorating “team” health could be linked to pathogenic cultural growths, like bacteria and yeast.

  22. SleepyBoneQueen

That is the dumbest shit I have ever seen in my god damn life. Fuck the health department. Call the FIRE department. Like yesterday. You can NOT operate like that.

  23. StonedSnawley

This reminds me of when I got electrocuted scrubbing down the walls due to a loose electrical outlet cover. They never fixed it, so I never cleaned the walls.

  24. grimmigerpetz

Dude. If the owner doesnt give a fuck about such things he should stand at that place instead of you. Give him one last chance to change the stuff asap and then get out with a note to health department. This is unsafe.

Source: A owner that is not insane.

PS: We have a lot of old machines 25+ years but they are maintained and cleaned. Those fryers, floor and shieldings look…not so cared? The photo gives a vibe of resignation from all sides.

  25. chefelvisOG2

It could be nothing or it could be faces of death.

  26. Mermaid_meriah_

Also, on top of ALL ELSE, there is this fun cord RIGHT IN FRONT waiting for someone to get caught in and pull the fryer on top of them. Big time burn victim. Orr… wait! Who the hell knows what’s gonna happen? You guys are talking about the shelf being an accident waiting to happen — what about this fucking cord? Spill hot grease on it and it melts the outside and all of a sudden not only do you have a gas leak, burn potential, but now we have an electrocution problem!!

  27. Comprehensive-Tap769

I don’t work in a kitchen and never have but I would have linked the gas leak and health matters together. Also I’ve worked in a warehouse for a while and osha would goodfellas your boss if that was found out.

  28. Absolutely you are not overreacting – our management did not fix a fryer that had a loose leg and it tipped over and severely burnt one of my coworkers- his entire arm 3rd degree burns (he’s lucky it didn’t get his face) show these pictures to the health department email them – these conditions are unacceptable !!

  29. topsukkeli

shut up and accept your minimun wage with a smile while working 16h in these conditions!

  30. Nice burn marks. A year to “heal”? Oh wow.. Sorry to hear that.
An what, lost your job and no-one hiring you ’cause they think you endanger others?

    Yeah, life.
