There’s a new French bakery coming to Water Street called Belle Boulangerie, and it’s moving into a previously empty storefront downtown. The KJ is reporting that the owner, Galyna Syrota, used to bake for markets up in the Bangor area and ran a well-loved bakery with the same name in Sebec.
That spot even had seating inside and live music. Her husband, Ambrose Lovely, says people would often start lining up around the block a good half-hour before the place even opened.
Ambrose Lovely told the Kennebec Journal in part,
“Working all the previous day, get up at 3 a.m. to open the door at 8, and then sometimes we wouldn’t even make it to 9 o’clock before selling out. Done, gone. Everything.”
When Syrota couldn’t extend her lease in Sebec she started looking for a new spot with a lively and growing food scene. While she was out shopping in the area with her sister and her mother-in-law, she discovered the space at 156 Water St, which used to be a barber shop and more recently was actually a gluten free bakery,
Belle Boulangerie is also another great addition to Hallowell’s growing downtown scene. It’s actually the third business to move into an empty Water Street storefront in just the last few months.
Lady J’s Elegant Attire and Event Planning opened back in January at the corner of Water and Winthrop, and Lately’s, a new bagel and pizza shop, is getting ready to open its doors soon as well.
