The ‘Pour Yourself a Glass of New Zealand’ campaign is a vibrant celebration of New Zealand’s exquisite white wines, taking place throughout May in the UK. This initiative, spearheaded by New Zealand Winegrowers, aims to showcase the exceptional quality and variety of New Zealand’s white wines, which have garnered international acclaim.
The campaign shines a spotlight on New Zealand’s top white wine varieties, including Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Gris, and Chardonnay. These wines are celebrated on specific days in May: International Sauvignon Blanc Day (May 2), International Pinot Gris Day (May 17), and International Chardonnay Day (May 25).
The campaign also highlights New Zealand’s commitment to sustainable winemaking practices. The country’s unique climate and geography contribute to the production of pure, fresh, and delicate white wines.
Roaring Meg
This week Penny Edwards, from Cellar Door wines has selected the Roaring Meg Pinot Gris 2023 from Central Otago (£18.95 from Cellar Door Wines)
The name ‘Roaring Meg’ is inspired by a lively stream in Central Otago, New Zealand.
This stream was named during the gold rush era, after a spirited woman named Meg, whose energetic crossing of the stream left a lasting impression on the miners of the time.
Roaring Meg Pinot Gris is crafted by Mt Difficulty Wines, a distinguished winery in Central Otago.
Known for its dedication to sustainable practices and high-quality wine production, Mt Difficulty has been a key player in the region since the early 1990s. Their wines are elebrated for capturing the unique characteristics of Central Otago’s terroir.
The 2023 vintage is a vibrant and aromatic wine. It greets you with a bouquet of white pear, passionfruit, melon, and green mango. On the palate, these fruity notes are complemented by a rich, textured mid-palate and a slightly off-dry finish. The wine’s balanced acidity and subtle hints of spice make it a refreshing and enjoyable choice.
Roaring Meg Pinot Gris pairs beautifully with a variety of dishes. Its bright acidity and fruity profile make it an excellent match for seafood, such as grilled snapper or prawns. It also complements poultry dishes like lemon chicken and pairs well with lightly spiced Asian cuisine. For a vegetarian option, consider pairing it with a creamy risotto or a fresh vegetable stir-fry.
Next up is a red wine from New Zealand, not strictly part of the campaign but I can’t resist New Zealand reds, usually Pinot Noir, but this week it’s a Merlot!
Sileni Merlot 2021 (£16.95 from Cellar Door Wines)
The name ‘Sileni’ is inspired by Roman mythology. The Sileni were companions of Bacchus, the god of wine, and were known for their love of good food, wine, and company. This name reflects the winery’s dedication to producing wines that celebrate life’s pleasures.
This Merlot is produced by Sileni Estates, a prominent winery located in Hawke’s Bay, New Zealand. Founded in 1997 by Graeme Avery, along with financial director Chris Cowper and winemaker Grant Edmonds, Sileni Estates has established itself as an export-oriented producer committed to crafting world-class wines. The winery is situated near Hastings, in the oldest wine region of New Zealand, known for its ideal climate and soil conditions for viticulture.
It’s a classic example of Hawke’s Bay Merlot. It boasts ripe blackcurrant and plum aromas, complemented by elegant spice notes. On the palate, you’ll find dark berry fruit flavours with excellent depth and roundness, leading to a deliciously soft finish.
The wine’s velvety tannins and balanced acidity make it an easy-drinking yet sophisticated choice.
Its rich fruit flavours and smooth finish make it an excellent match for hearty meals such as spaghetti Bolognese, lasagna, or braised beef. It also complements grilled meats like spare ribs or a juicy steak. For a more adventurous pairing, try it with crispy duck pancakes or a lamb roast with all the trimmings.
Independent retailers across the UK, including our local merchant, Cellar Door Wines have joined the campaign and will be featuring a selection of New Zealand wines, with a focus on white varieties.
