Hey all,

New to pepper growing. I live in the northeast US, and temperatures are about to hit around 50F.

I brought all my peppers into the garage last night- but seeing how dark it was. I tried to put them near a windowsill.

Temperature should be like this for about a week. Some flower petals fell off- I’m not sure if this is normal or cold induced. Currently I only have one fruit, which is still early on in its growth.

Is there something else I should be doing?

Same story up north, probably a couple million pepper plants sitting just like yours. They’ll be fine.

Is 50F as low as it’s supposed to get? I’m near Chicago and we’re also having some low temps, but if your plants are hardened off and already used to swings in temperatures, 50F shouldn’t be a problem. I’ve left mine out this year with overnight lows down to 47F-ish, and they show zero cold damage whatsoever.

I’d been bringing them in if the lows were lower, but at this point I have some in 16″ pots that are too big to move around, so I covered them with a garbage bag to help insulate a bit the other night when temps dipped, and again everyone looks just fine. (There are a few tomato leaves that look like they took a little damage before the plants were fully hardened off, but all the pepper plants look great! They seem to be pretty resilient, despite generally preferring warmer temperatures)
