Need some input on these. The package says best before May 23rd but I’ve never seen steaks this colour. What do y’all think?

  1. Give them a smell….the nose knows. Could just be oxidation…

I always say go by the smell. I’m a butcher and I’ve seen meat turn that color within a day.

A lot of places dye their meat to make it look more “fresh”?

That’s what meat looks like that is oxidized, perfectly normal and a sign of healthy meat. If it smells acrid or like death, it’s no good but those look great

Thank you all!! You guys are so helpful 😊 will grill em up !!

you haven’t seen 1 year dry aged meat yet?

Give it the nose test is really the best option with these.
That being said, if it makes you sleep at night toss em. There’s nothing worse than the anxiety with comes using questionable meat.
I think those are probably still good, I’d use an acid based marinade if I were using em.

If they start to smell like a dead body….even a little. Gotta go. If not, fire it up dude. It’s all brown on the outside anyways.

Just do the smell test. No smell you’re good

Push your nose in them. If you don’t trust your nose let your dog sniff em.

  10. If you’re concerned, maybe these are 145F-150F or higher temp steaks just in case. Maybe even these are now “Fajita” steaks so thinly sliced they cook on more sides and maybe that can bring assurance these will be safe to consume.

Smell them if they smell all right cook them and then taste them

Taking it a step further, bright red steaks that we all know and have been taught to love are often “map”’d or wanded with a low grade of carbon monoxide to keep them bright red and appealing-looking. This is why the undersides in the tray are often NOT that color. As others have said, unless it smells off they are good to go.

Color doesn’t mean much unless it’s white, green, or blue. In this circumstance, just give it a sniff and if you don’t smell any funk, it’s it going to be okay

  14. It’s incredibly hard for the meat to go bad. I look under microscope for autopsies. Even dead human bodies that have decomposed for days at room temperature the muscle fibers still look as good as normal live ones. This is why humans figured out to cure hams etc. Fat might decompose very quickly though. So if your meat is very fatty, it won’t taste fresh.

  15. A faint meat smell
Is still good, a spoiled meat smell
Is very distinct and honestly can’t be missed

If in doubt throw it out!
Don’t throw it out take it back to the shop you bought it from.

Not bad like you’ll get sick.

    Buuut

Oxidized and have a slight gamey taste

  18. Unfair-Snow7663

Yes , however I would soak them in salt and rinse them season marinate for 3 days and broil them

  19. FlatBrokeEconomist

Looks like they just got a little oxygen on them. Wipe it off and they’ll be good to go.

  20. Dusty8103

Likely just oxidized. If they smell fine, I’m sure they are fine

  21. thrashcountant

Beef is injected with red eyes of sort to make it appealing. It should be fine.

  22. Look fine…how do they smell?

Get confident using your senses then you can be confident identifying spoilage.
