2018 Burgess Contadina
Enjoyed at Howells in San Francisco.
Decanted and enjoyed over an hour, but I know it would get only better with another hour.
Bottle was great, showing some benefits from time in the bottle. Will likely only get better with age.
Dark cherry, dark plum notes, with good acidity. Tannins still slightly grippy, but mellowed out a bit.
At $40 a bottle at K&L, this is an incredible deal.
91 points.

Sorry if this is a dumb question but what is QPR?
Yep, solid stuff. Black stallion is another absolute QPR monster in Napa, imo. Really shows that rich, balanced, ritzy Napa thing but for like $30. Could easily sell for $50+
A quality wine at an affordable price from Napa is a rare find, and Burgess continues to be a shining example of that. Solid review, thanks for sharing.
I just had a bottle of their Alpinist Red Blend and it was absolute swill. I have a second one, so it remains to be seen if it was just a bad bottle.
The old ones are so good too
Burgess head winemaker was recently headhunted to now be the director of Winemaking at Opus One.

This reminds me that I still have an ‘82 Burgess
Port in the cellar somewhere.
I don’t understand people who say there’s no good QPR in Napa. I find it all the time.
Very different cost for the pre Lawrence Wine Estate Burgess vs. what Burgess costs now. Woof.
I enjoy the Contadina, and it kills at $40ish but their new wines are outrageously priced
Picked up a couple 2017 bottles earlier this year from Costco at $30 clearance. Was excellent!
Burgess is also a great winery visit if you are ever in Napa.
