Following this, as I want to do corn in a limited space next year

I just planted corn for the first time and the package said 9 inches apart, rows 2-3 feet apart, at least 4 rows for pollination. I would thin them out quite a bit. I don’t think you’ll get good corn with them being so crowded.

Definitely want to see how this goes.

These will be fine, some of them will produce less but you’ll get lots off this bed if you can keep the creatures out. You’ll probably want to fertilize once a month for a boost in production. Definitely recommend getting a crop cage, or getting mesh ready to drape over once there are ears. The raccoons will be summoned in force if you don’t protect it – they will get it.

They say to plant it in blocks as being close together helps tjem to pollinate and make corn, so i dont think being close together is a huge issue..look at corn fields, they are close to each other

ehhh I think it’ll be fine. Probably get great pollination, you can always shake em and hand pollinate as well. They might flop over so easy to tie a cord around them to hold them up. what variety are you growing?
Let’s go corn!!

I planted pretty close this year, and mine are doing pretty great (for me anyway, I never get corn). Just make sure they get enough food and water.

Looks really good. In a small area like this, you ignore what the packet says and no you don’t plant it like farmers do in fields.
I did a 4×4 area and I packed it pretty well. Pollination was not an issue. My corn has spread been picked but I missed the window and it wasn’t sweet at all. Luckily I can plant a second round in September. I’ll be planting a variety that has a longer window for harvest.
You’re doing great. Keep it fertilized and watered.

How long does it take to be ready for picking ? First time growing it this year , looks good so far.

I used to grow corn in rubber totes when I lived in the city and had limited space. I would plant close and fertilize often. We always had a nice small crop.

yeah if i remember correctly the one time i tried corn i packed it about that thick. keep it fertilized and watered. also maybe wear a mask if you’ve got a grass allergy. i had the worst allergies that year and i was sure it was from the corn, its why i never tried growing it again.

I have grown corn in 20 gallon grow bags for years. I plant them super heavy like 20-25 per bag and get great results. I stagger my plantings by several weeks and keep them in different areas of my property so I don’t get cross pollination. I’m in Phoenix so I grow them 10 months of the year. Middle of December to middle of February is too cold for good germination but otherwise I will plant sweet corn in a bag, two weeks later a Taos blue or Oaxacan Green dent corn in another bag, two weeks later blue or red popping corn in another bag, and so on. We have corn year around this way. Because they are so heavily planted they need regular fertilizing which I use fish emulsion until they tassel then switch over to seaweed fertilizer. Before you replant you need to add lots of earthworm castings and quality compost because they drain your soil of all the nutrients.
