The Royal Family are prohibited from eating four unexpected foods – and there’s an interesting reason why one of them will never appear on their plates.
Many might envision the Firm enjoying lavish meals daily, with chefs available to ensure every breakfast, lunch, and dinner is exceptional. However, preparing meals for one of the world’s most renowned families isn’t as straightforward as it appears, as several foods are entirely off-limits – either due to health concerns or personal preference.
The TikTok account Royal Family Express revealed: “Did you know that there are foods that the Royal Family are banned from eating and won’t be served at royal engagements? ” The fan account stated the first two foods are ‘pretty obvious’ due to the associated ‘risks’.
“Shellfish are always kept off the menu, especially if abroad, to avoid any of the family getting a bad case of food poisoning,” they continued. “Raw meat is also kept away from the royals, so they can’t enjoy a nice steak tartare at an official meal. Camilla revealed that the royal chefs will avoid serving food that contains too much garlic or [onion], and in 2008, the then Prince Charles banned foie gras from royal palaces.”
“The King is well-known for his animal rights activism, and therefore he stops chefs from buying the pâté.”
Foie gras may be off the menu for ethical reasons, but there’s also a very good reason why onions and garlic are absent from Royal plates. Royal chef John Higgins once disclosed: “At Buckingham Palace, you don’t cook with garlic. I suppose, in case you get the Royal burp.”, reports Gloucestershire Live.
Queen Camilla confirmed in 2018 that this rule was primarily enforced at Royal events and state banquets, both at home and abroad. However, while there may be a sound reason the Firm avoids allium vegetables, many people were quick to voice their disappointment at the rule.
Fans of the royals joked that British food is notably bland
“No shellfish, little garlic and onions… No wonder I’m not a Royal,” one person joked in the video comments.
“British food isn’t known for its bold [flavors],” another commented. Beyond flavor, the royals could be missing out on some significant health benefits by avoiding onions and garlic.
Both are considered superfoods and offer “heart-protective benefits,” according to Spice World Inc. “Garlic and onions are allium vegetables, meaning that they contain high levels of organosulfur compounds which have been shown to reduce cholesterol and blood pressure,” the site states.
Some research suggests that regular consumption of onions and garlic can lower the risk of cancer.
