The issue with the bf’s steak is he didn’t let it come to temp before cooking, so there’s heavy banding. The rareness isn’t that different between the two, though. So I’d actually like to know your dad’s complaint. Your dad’s slicing is more attractive and it looks juicier visually.

The cook is on point, question is in the taste. Did he freeze it and then thaw and cook? Meat that you get from the butcher or store, if thawed, shouldn’t be refrozen. If you get it frozen, then slow thaw it, otherwise you change the flavor. Then question is how he seasoned or cooked it. But his temps look next to perfect.
Dad’s looks like the clear winner. The original, the bf’s I believe, was too under-done yet somehow still looked dry af.
I’d rather eat dad’s steak.
I think everyone is misreading. This is the steak the dad cooked. Right? First post boyfriend cooked.

Your dad is being a bit harsh, but your bf does have some learning to do. Your bf’s steak in very inconsistent. Thick gray parts, and nearly rare parts on the same steak.
