NEW HAVEN, CT — A popular New Haven eatery was recently recognized as one of the best Italian restaurants in the world by a top Italian food and wine magazine and publishing group.
Strega, located at 1006 Chapel Street, recently received Gambero Rosso’s 2025 Top Italian Restaurant award, a prestigious honor that recognizes the New Haven restaurant “as one of the best Italian restaurants in the world,” according to a social media post by The Shops at Yale.
The post congratulated owner and executive chef Danilo Mongillo and noted Gambero Rosso as “Italy’s premier food and wine authority” that awards top authentic Italian restaurants with its highly selective one, two or three “forchette,” or forks, rating.
Strega, which is located just a few minutes away from Yale University in downtown New Haven, received two forchettes, according to the post.
“With over a decade of experience in the industry, Mongillo is a seasoned restaurateur,” the post reads. “This marks his sixth Gambero Rosso distinction for the Strega restaurant group, further cementing his reputation for excellence in Italian cuisine.”
In addition to New Haven, Mongillo operates a Strega restaurant in downtown Milford.
According to the Strega website, Mongillo is an award-winning chef who brings his natural talents and skills from his native Italy to both of his Strega restaurants.
