With fuel prices still stretching budgets across Spain, Repsol has launched an unusual but compelling offer: trade your used cooking oil for fuel discounts. What began as a local test in Madrid is now available in more and more petrol stations nationwide. For many households, it is becoming a small yet meaningful way to save money and reduce waste simultaneously.
Free fuel for old oil, yes, really
With petrol prices still biting and groceries not far behind, a bottle of used olive oil can be worth more than you think. Repsol is one of Spain’s major fuel providers and is now offering fuel discounts in exchange for your used cooking oil.
That’s right, instead of pouring the oil down the sink, you can bring it to a participating Repsol service station and get €0.30 per litre of oil. And not in cash, but as application credit to knock euros off your next fill-up. What began as a small scheme in Madrid has grown into a nationwide environmental programme. It is surprisingly easy to participate in.
Why Repsol is doing this
Their goal is twofold, meaning sustainability and savings. Repsol collects your used olive oil or sunflower oil and transforms it into renewable fuel, a cleaner alternative to traditional diesel. This is part of the company’s new initiative to reduce emissions. For you, it’s a discount. For Repsol, it’s progress. For the planet, it is one less litre of oil poured down the drain or into the rubbish.
How the programme works
All you need to do is bring your used cooking oil in the proper container:
A transparent plastic bottle, no bigger than 5 litres
Tightly seal it with its original cap
This is the typical packaging for olive oil, and makes it easy for households to reuse. Once you arrive at the station, a staff member will inspect the bottle and accept it if it meets the conditions.
What do you get in return? For every litre, you will get €0.30 credited to your Waylet account, Repsol’s own payment and discount application. It is essential to note that you will not receive cash or a paper voucher. The credit is digital and can only be used through the Waylet app at Repsol stations.
How to use your Waylet balance
Once the station staff accepts your used oil and logs your deposit, you will open the Waylet app and do the following:
Tap the profile icon in the top right corner
Select “Add your temporary code
Scan the QR code given by the station employee
Your discount has been instantly added to your account
When you go to refuel next time, pay through the application to apply that balance. More and more Repsol service stations across Spain are joining this initiative. You can check the ones near you by using an interactive map published through this link.
This initiative might seem small, but it is a clever, low-effort exchange advantage that benefits everyone. You can help keep old oil out of landfills and pipes, get a little relief at the pump, and contribute to Spain’s efforts to achieve cleaner energy goals. So next time, you are about to toss the bottle of frying oil, please bottle it, cap it, and let Repsol turn it into fuel, literally.
