My cuke plant finally gave me a cucumber! So far just the one but should I harvest it or wait a few more days? This is my first go at veggie gardening so I'm in sure of when to cut this guy off.

What variety of cucumber are you growing? I would say this looks like a great size to harvest, if a cucumber get too big, it tells the plant to stop producing fruit. Play around with which size you think tastes the best, there will be plenty more cucumbers after this one!

Slice that up. Dip it in some ranch or blue cheese!

In my experience with cucumbers, the more you pick the more you get!

Better to take cucumbers early. They start yellowing and the plant will basically be done

Yes i would cause if the cuk gets big so do the seeds inside so you dont want it all seeds..!! Now’s a good time actually a bit big already. Good job!!!

  6. IWantToBeAProducer

I would. I generally prefer them smaller anyway.

Best time was probably yesterday. Second best time is now!

Yes! Looks like a perfect time to me. Once it’s picked, the plant will spend its energy on future fruiting. Congrats and enjoy!

Pick immediately. Next time pick a day or two sooner. Cukes will often “give up” after they make a fully mature fruit.

You usually want to pick them before they get that bulge you’re seeing (that means the seeds are starting to mature). If you pick too late (when they start changing color) you might slow down or stop future production because the plant thinks it reproduced successfully. There’s not really such a thing as an immature cucumber, you can pick them as early as you want and they are safe to eat.

Yes with cucumbers you want to harvest before it’s 100% ripe. Let it finish on the counter. If your fruit over ripens on the vine your plant will start to kill its self off as a form of reproduction. The more you harvest the more the plant will grow to ensure it has fruit to drop. If that makes sense.

Pick it and snack it! I would’ve picked it two-four days earlier. The younger ones are crunchier 🙂

I’d pick it because it’s looking mature.

    Cucumbers are tricky buggers.

Their game is to produce one great big yellow green cuke about eight pounds, skin like bark and full full full of mush and seeds. They’ll do whatever it takes to get there. Once that’s done they stop flowering and put all their energy into that one big fruit.

But you can trick them. Feed and water them and they’ll get busy. Every time they set fruit pick it just before it’s looking ripe. You fill your kitchen with cukes and they’ll never give up on their dreams.

Slicing cucumbers like this are ready when they have that plump look rather than wrinkly. It won’t grow more, it will just become over ripe (turning yellow). It’s ready to pick now

i generally try to pick cucumbers when they’re still got some wrinkle to them. seeds are often smaller then.

Yes, before it eats a neighbors cat.

The good thing about cucumbers is it never to early to pick them. Think about the little cocktail pickles

Your cucumber is ready to be harvest ! Wouldn’t wait another day or it will be too old for harvest, cucumbers are ready to be harvest when at 6 inches and the more you harvest the more fruits will grow!
