I was in Costco this evening and every bottle of this wine was wrapped in paper (none of the others) Anyone know why? I decided to pick up a bottle its a white from Galicia – Terras Gauda Albarino O Rosal

In theory, the paper is to act as a barrier so the bottles don’t smash together and break during shipping / storing.
In reality, it is a marketing technique to make the product appear fancier.

Generally fine wines often come packed this way as an extra layer of protection against light and dirt. I haven’t ever seen it on a wine at that price point however. Spanish juice so I’m sure it’s great.

Wine is really vulnerable for UV light (light strike), especially in lighter coloured bottles, the paper helps protect the wine from UV. Besides that it also protects the labels from damaging, damaged labels reduce price in the long run.

Well the marketing worked didn’t it!

It was shipped from the winery that way. In theory, it’s extra protection for the wine, especially if you are cellaring it.
Sometimes, it’s more of a marketing device.

I assumed it was to protect the labels during shipping, I have seen some where there label was worn through where it rubbed against another bottle.

Terras Guada is one of my favorite Albariños and that is a great price, fyi

Buy a bunch of that. That’s a killer wine.

Marketing technique to make you think the wine is more “premium”

Great wine, and always sold like this. Must be their traditional packaging

Honestly it does help. When I buy 2 bottles at my local fancy wine shop, they will bag one bottle and put that into a larger bag with the other bottle. Now that I think about it even BevMo does this?

Helps protect the label as well as the bottle. Mostly it’s for marketing, but there is some benefit in storing wine long term in your cellar wrapped in paper. I’ll put Saran Wrap on certain bottles I plan on aging in my cellar for a while when I want to protect the label.

It’s a lovely Wine btw

It’s to keep it from getting to cold.

Protects the labels, I do the same for the wines I keep in my cave. Many years of opening and closing will destroy the labels eventually.

Why would they state the price both without, and in smaller text, with, VAT?

To look extensível…

They’re there to protect the labels.

Came from the winery like that. Too much work to take it off.

This is literally more expensive in Galicia. Insane price.
