Worms probably tunneled in originally. Ants came in afterwards.

Buy a bunch of mesh bags and cover them while they’re green! Could be any bug. But also, pick at first blush

    BT for Tomatoes

Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) is a naturally occurring soil bacterium that is commonly used as a biological control agent for managing insect pests on tomato plants. It targets and eliminates caterpillars, including tomato hornworms, without harming beneficial insects, animals, or humans.23
Bt is effective against caterpillars because it produces a stomach toxin that causes them to stop feeding and eventually die.3 It is particularly useful for controlling tomato hornworms, which can devastate tomato plants quickly.2 Bt can be applied as a powder or liquid and should be sprayed on the young larval stages for best results.3
In addition to tomato hornworms, Bt can also control other caterpillars such as cabbage loopers, cutworms, and gypsy moth larvae.3 It is safe for use on tomatoes and other vegetables like potatoes, eggplant, and elms.2
Research has shown that Bt can persist on tomato plants and even reach the fruits, but it is generally considered safe for consumption.4 When using Bt, it is important to ensure good coverage during application to maximize its effectiveness.
