Third year gardening. first time making a tomato trellis. Kind of just rigged something up. Hope it works. Also bonus kittens me and my fiance got a few days ago. Finally old enough to adopt. found them in my work truck almost two months ago

  1. Just go with it. Trying new things is part of the gardening fun. If it doesn’t work as well as you want, lesson learned and move on.
    Enjoy yourself

Tomatoes AND kittens? You are in for a dream summer! I am a huge fan of single vine tomatoes on a string. I tried those clips last year and found them to be too much of a PITA at the end of season when I had to wrangle unclipping 200 of them. This year I’m just going to be winding the vine around the string as much as possible, and only tying fruit heavy trellises when needed.

    r/tomatoes + r/catfruit for the win!

Why did it take so long to get them kitties home?

    Yeah, it’ll work fine!

I switched to a string trellis setup a few years ago after always having grown in (very large) homemade cages.

Didn’t really care for it — too many clips required, and I thought they were too fiddly — the following year I wove horizontal lines through the vertical ones to make a net trellis; that way I can tuck the plants into the openings as they grow & just use zipties where needed. Has served me well for the last five years (I used wire rope, so it’s more or less permanent).

But yeah, vertical lines + clips works perfectly well — just be liberal with the clips, especially for larger fruited varieties. They’re cheap, so better to waste a few out of an abundance of caution rather than have them start busting loose on you later on 🙂
