Welcome back to The Slice!

What if we told you there was a restaurant where you could get all-you-can-eat lasagna? Well it exists, in Shoreditch, and we couldn’t resist trying it for ourselves. This week, we’re telling you what we made of the experience at new Italian Amerian restaurant Senza Fondo. We’ll also let you in on just how many plates of lasagna we managed to eat (the current record is seven!).

But if you fancy a more leisurely dining experience, we’re telling you where to find the best breakfast in London with a twist, including Shoryu’s about-to-launch breakfast where you can eat soupless ramen with raw egg yolk and chicken karaage waffles as early as 8:30am in the morning.

Plus, you can win tickets to Polygon Live LDN, the UK’s first 360º immersive music festival. Artists such as Max Cooper and Jon Hopkins will be performing in the epic three-day event.

This week in London

If you’re looking for something to do this weekend, here are 9 of the best activities, dining, and drinking spots in the capital.

1. Eat as much lasagna as you want at Senza Fondo

By Sophie Laughton

How many portions of lasagna do you reckon you can finish? According to Senza Fondo, the current record is seven.

I was defeated after two, but that’s still a very reasonable £10 per portion. And it’s a proper wedge of the stuff, oozing beef shin ragu and utterly smothered in parmesan cheese. Their veggie version is strong in its own right. The recipe was inspired by a restaurant in Rome, with artichokes soaked for hours in brine, drenched in béchamel, and squished between layers of pasta to create a stodgy, yet fantastically savoury slab. Both are a fun, effective gimmick in the same way the £5 pre-dinner negroni is – you’re probably going to give it a go. Service is lightning fast, so don’t worry about not having enough time for the challenge, these guys could keep those plates coming all night.

But you don’t have to come here for the lasagna. You could just come for very cool, very fun Italian-American vibes, and pile your table with pistachio-sprayed mortadella, crisp pepperoni pizettas drizzled with hot honey, ice-cold martinis and luscious homemade olive oil ice cream. Get in line – they’re basically booked up until May.

Small plates from £6. Bottomless lasagna, £20. 1 Rufus Street, Shoreditch, N1 6PE. Book here.

2. Where to eat breakfast with a twist in London

Shoryu breakfast
These breakfasts are sure not to bore you (Picture: Supplied)
Shoryu

Best for: a Japanese feast

Cult favourite ramen spot Shoryu Ramen is introducing breakfast for the first time ever. Expect indulgent Japanese breakfast dishes with contemporary twists like the Smashed Avocado Shokupan, creamy avocado on soft Japanese milk bread with a soy marinated nitamago gooey egg. And the Morning Mazemen which is a soupless ramen with raw egg yolk (why not?) and char siu pork belly. We also can’t wait to try the chicken karaage waffle, with soy-marinated Japanese fried chicken and a fluffy waffle! Drinks range from a fragrant Yuzu Jasmine Tea to a Melon Cream Soda.

From 21 April. Exclusively available at Shoryu Ramen, Covent Garden. Book here.

Kricket

Best for: sugar, spice and all things nice

The well-loved Full English gets an upgrade at Kricket’s newly launched breakfast. Once you’ve taken in the pastel pink walls and bliss tropical decor, you’re confronted with Indian flavours and British staples beautifully meshed together to make a menu of dreams. Order The Full Kricket – a spiced hash brown, mushroom, fried egg, chole (chickpeas with a punchy helping of cumin and chilli) and a thick piece of bacon – and you’ll leave happy. Or go one step further and order the Shahi Tukda (Indian French toast) – light as a feather, sitting in an equally light pool of custard, with refreshingly tangy rhubarb on top. We won’t be forgetting this breakfast for a long time.

The Full Kricket, £14. Shahi Tukda, £9. Exclusively available at Kricket, Shoreditch. Book here.

The Italian Greyhound

Best for: a leisurely Marylebone morning

The Italian Greyhound’s new breakfast menu has launched today, and it’s – you guessed it – an Italian take on classic brunch dishes. Crafted by Head Chef Rob Carmo, the menu has sophisticated written all over it. Expect fun dishes like Mortadella Benedict – featuring delicate mortadella, poached eggs, and silky hollandaise – and the Full Italian, with smoked pancetta, pork & fennel sausage and more. It also has a beautiful terrace, a great place to eat breakfast while watching the world go by if you ask us.

Mortadella Benedict, £11/16. The Full Italian, £18.50. 62 Seymour Street, Marylebone. Book here.

3. Treat yourself to truffle and cheddar beignets and more at Don’t Tell Dad

Don't Tell Dad

‘Queen’s Park is the new culinary Hackney,’ my lunching companion declares. Bang on. It’s a busy Friday at Don’t Tell Dad on northwest London and the bakery/retail/coffee shop has cleared of buggies and yoga mats to transform into a restaurant from Luke Frankie, one of Jamie Oliver’s original Fifteen, who has worked under Skye Gyngell and Stevie Parle.

We order crumpets piled high with melting oxtail and dripping crumb along with truffle and cheddar beignets with mushroom ketchup, that both, with good reason, become social stars. Next, monkfish, pan seared and baked in the oven served with artichoke, spinach and dill béarnaise we match with a chicory, pear, Comte and candied walnut salad (all exquisite). We somehow find room for the rhubarb and almond tart with crème fraîche, which disappears with indecent haste. The name of the restaurant comes from the phrase founder Daniel Land and his late sister Lesley would say when up to no good. It’s a wonderful tribute. Because all is good at Don’t Tell Dad, all is good. Just tell everyone.

Snacks from £3. 10-14 Lonsdale Rd, Queen’s Park, NW6 6RD. Book here.

4. Brand-new Ukrainian restaurant, Tatar Bunar, is about to open

Opening on 9 April is Ukrainian restaurant Tatar Bunar. The menu will see decades old family recipes including on the menu, like Bunar tartare and Ukrainian onion bread with lardo. The restaurant also features Ukrainian craftsmen and makers, with ceramics made by Svetlana Sholomitska during the Kyiv blackouts.

5. Get 50% of all food at Kung Fu Mama

Ottolenghi co-founder, Noam Bar-Chang, has teamed up with Chris Hsu to bring healthy Taiwanese street food to London at Kung Fu Mama. Expect oven-baked instead of deep fat fried dishes, and seed oil swapped out for extra-virgin olive oil. Even better, the new noodle bar is offering 50% off all food during soft launch week 8-11 April (just walk in any time between 11am – 3pm). Thank us later. Find out more.

6. Get one of the FREE picnic kits at Blank Street

It’s almost picnic weather time! And to get you warmed up, Blank Street are kicking things off with their new ‘Press for Picnic’ kiosk. To celebrate their new Spring menu, they’re giving out FREE picnic kits to the first 100 customers in line at the kiosk from 3-9 April. Opening times will only be viewable on the day through the Blank Street app or on Blank Street’s Instagram, so keep an eye out!

7. Get yourself a crackin’ lobster bargain

Burger & Lobster
An amazing deal if you ask us (Picture: David Robson)

Burger and Lobster is bringing back its iconic Legendary Market Tuesdays. It means that every Tuesday from 5PM onwards, you can get premium 1.25lb whole lobsters priced to match the market value at Borough Market. This week, they’ll be priced at £27 (usually priced at £38). A crackin’ bargain if you ask us. Find out more here.

8. Learn about some of the most famous cats at The Cartoon Museum

It’s time to learn about some of TV’s most famous cats – from Garfield to Simon’s Cat, Krazy Kat to Bagpuss. The Cartoon Museum in Fitzrovia is exploring just why why people love cats so much and what felines can tell us about life (apparently, rather a lot!).

9. Experience Tutankhamun

‘Once you go through this curtain you’ll officially be in ancient Egypt,’ a member of staff told us as we prepared to enter Tutankhamun: The Immersive Exhibition. The 3D virtual reality experience, complete with digital Metaverse room where you step into the virtual shoes of archeologist Howard Carter, is an impressive feat of technology and I can tell a lot of work has gone into it. But while the animated projections on the 8m tall viewing screens give it their best shot (and the scurrying lizards were cute), I find I can’t quite suspend my disbelief.

As someone with an obsession with ancient Egypt who went on a Nile cruise earlier this year, I was hoping to be transported back to the Valley of the Kings, where I saw the actual mummy of Tutankhamun – and to be fair, the replicas of his tomb were pretty accurate.

Bear in mind that there are only a few authentic Egyptian artefacts, but instead huge display boards full of text which are difficult to take in. A lesson about embalming is made somewhat off-putting by a voiceover that sounds distinctly AI-generated. The Metaverse portion was unfortunately cut short due to long lines caused by technical difficulties on our visit, but first night teething problems are expected.

Tickets from £20 for adults, £15.50 for children. Exhibition runs at Immerse LDN at Excel London Waterfront on March 28-June 29. Book here.
