As a Midwestern gal, I’ve always thought of Door County as synonymous with summer. With its thick forests, yummy cheese curds, and unbeatable lakefront, there’s no better warm-weather destination. As with any good summertime getaway, waterfront dining is a must. Sonny’s Italian Kitchen and Pizzeria in Sturgeon Bay is the place to be this season for the best waterfront dining in Wisconsin.
As the name suggests, Sonny’s Italian Kitchen and Pizzeria serves up some of the best Italian food around. I ate a lot on my latest trip to Door County, and Sonny’s was one of my favorite restaurants in the area. I was particularly delighted by the stuffed gnocchi pesto and BBQ chicken pizza.

Bridge Up Brewing Company shares a space with Sonny’s, which means diners can indulge in some delicious local brews, as well. Bridge Up Brewing’s hazy IPA, Flip Flops and Bikini Tops, pairs particularly well with waterfront dining. Of course, they offer everything from full-bodied stouts to light and refreshing pilsners that go perfectly with a red pizza.

While the food is excellent, it’s the restaurant’s outdoor dining space that steals the show. With views of the historic Michigan Street Bridge, also known as the Sturgeon Bay Bridge, diners can enjoy their meal while watching boats pass by and taking in the beautiful Wisconsin scenery. The outdoor space, called the Tiki Bar, features plenty of seating, including couches. The Tiki Bar also provides outdoor games and fire pits that make it the perfect spot to gather and enjoy a meal with your crew. In addition to hand-tossed pizza, Sonny’s frequently hosts live musical acts.
Sonny’s Italian Kitchen and Pizzeria has been serving the Door County community for more than 20 years. In that time, it has frequently earned recognition for creating both the best Chicago-style pizza and the most authentic Neapolitan pizza in the area. Of course, a sweet treat should never be skipped. Be sure to try their cannolis or a scratch-made cherry pie (a beloved Door County tradition). Additionally, Sonny’s is a great spot to refuel after exploring Sturgeon Bay. It’s located just across the street from the Door County Maritime Museum (which I highly recommend visiting), as well as the extremely Instagrammable Woolly Mammoth Statue.
Sonny’s Italian Kitchen and Pizzeria is more than just a place to grab a bite to eat. Over the past 20 years, it’s become a beloved gathering spot that brings people together over delicious, scratch-made Italian cuisine. Whether you’re indulging in one of their award-winning pizzas or treating yourself to a decadent dessert, you’ll always feel at home at Sonny’s. It’s truly a place where locals and visitors come together on a waterfront patio and take in a beautiful Wisconsin summer.
