I bought this molcajete in Mexico and it seems great (smells sulfuric when wet, etc.), but I’m nervous about this green and white spot on its side. I got the molcajete completely wet, and the spot remained unchanged. I also tried scraping, and nothing happened.

Does anyone know what this could be?

  1. Lava rocks, or igneous rocks, often contain other bits of rock, called xenoliths or clasts, which are incorporated during their formation. This is fine.

It’s fine. It’s probably olivine. Most abundant mineral in the crust.
