I’m in South Carolina and always wanted to do a seafood boil. I went to a local restaurant and got some with crab and shrimp. I started opening up the shrimp and was concerned about this black stuff that was across the top on most of them under the shell.

Is this shrimp poop? I’ve never had shrimp like this before so I’m not sure if this is a southern thing or if the restaurant was just not up to standards.

I’m not sure if this is normal or not, but I lost my appetite and threw most of it away.

Wwyd?

This is something many would still eat and some who are not used to this would have a problem with.

  2. This is normal. It’s fine to eat, doesn’t affect the taste just the appearance.

It’s shrimp shit. I obv clean it out by deveining when I cook but when you get boils at places they just don’t have the time and resources to do that. You pay for salty, delish seafood boil at at a decent price. You eat shrimp shit.

Places near me will do deveined shrimp. Some places might not accommodate that, the additional labor of peeling and deveining is something they might not be happy about, and may even disrupt their kitchen methods/brigade chain so it would depend.
I can’t do shrimp that isn’t deveined because of the psychological aspect. Also I don’t like the mess and hassle of peeling shrimp. Especially shrimp already wet and covered in the boil juices, I just want to enjoy the dish and not get disrupted peeling each shrimp even if I am feeling ready to peel each shrimp haha.
A few spots near me lets you pick the seafood for your boil. I go for lobster, It’s good.
Otherwise, try out your own seafood boil! Check out zatarain’s seasoning and look up some videos/recipes, it’s a pretty easy thing to make on your own

And yeah that’s the shrimp’s digestive system

Just a heads up, I don’t think seafood is really for the squeamish. It’s pretty much; eat the eyes, suck the brains out, eat the eggs, eat the tentacle, eat the poop, suck the claw…

It’s just shrimp poop. If you’ve eaten shrimp you’ve eaten shrimp poop. Deal with it.

That’s really not weird. I have never been to a seafood boil where they’ve cleaned the shrimp. It’s almost unheard of.

All sorts of food has MUCH nastier substances hidden in it. At least shrimp dookie is literally just dirt

Cooking the shrimp with the shell on enhances the flavor and texture in a seafood boil. Deveining and peeling the shrimp often leads to overcooked, less flavorful shrimp. I would not recommend you try a crawfish boil either based on your preferences lol
