Queen Camilla celebrated her 20th wedding anniversary with King Charles at a state banquet in Italy on Wednesday, and while royal watchers may have been disappointed not to catch a glimpse of a royal tiara, the eagle-eyed saw that Her Majesty appeared to pay a subtle tribute to her husband on their special day.
As a crowd of 150 guests gathered in the Quirinale Palace, King Charles thanked his host, Italian President Sergio Mattarella, for putting on the festivities, which included a performance from the King’s Piper. ‘Today marks, as you say, the Queen’s and my 20th wedding anniversary,’ the King said, before making a humorous gesture to the opulence that surrounded the royal couple: ‘On that score, I must say it really is very good of you, Mr President, to lay on this small, romantic, candle-lit dinner for two.’

As F. Scott Fitzgerald once said, however, big parties are always more intimate, and amid the splendour, Queen Camilla managed to make a subtle reference to the day she and the then-Prince Charles tied the knot back in 2005. Her Majesty picked out a pair of diamond earrings from a suite of diamonds that are thought to have been a wedding gift from Charles, with Camilla making her debut in the cascading jewels at a dinner in San Francisco a few months after the big day.
