(4) Ingredients for the recipe: garlic, onions, parsley, tomatoes, sardines, Squid brand fish sauce, lemon juice, and a bit of leftover Vietnamese ngoc mam (fish and chile sauce) from last night’s take out from the Hiep Thai
(5-17) Heat the oil over medium heat and cook onion and garlic until fragrant and softened. Add fresh tomatoes and cook a few minutes until tomatoes are soft and have broken down. Turn heat down to medium-low and add fish with its sauce. Cook for a couple of minutes until sauce thickens a bit and fish are heated through. Add black pepper, 2 tsp. lemon juice and fish sauce – I added 1 tbsp of the leftover Ngoc mam (a mixture of fish sauce, sugar, and chile garlic paste). Stir well and taste – I added Calamansi soy sauce instead of regular salt – maybe 3/4 tsp. There is salt in the sardines, but I needed a little bit more to balance the dish. Add fresh parsley or cilantro – cook 30 seconds. Done! Serve over hot Jasmine rice
(18) The bite – it’s delicious and definitely Filipino! I love making food from the Philippines

This is a great tin of fish and a great recipe – I’ll totally make this again, but probably with another tin of tomato sauce sardines.
I’m having the same issue with this tin as with the other Mabuti tin I reviewed:
Mabuti made in the same Pinhais factory as Nuri, BUT this tin holds smaller sardines, it weighs less (90g) than a tin of Nuri (125g) BUT it costs 5.29 a tin where Nuri costs 4.99. So this smaller tin of Mabuti fish are 30 cents MORE than Nuri – for LESS fish!
The fish themselves are small and tender without being mushy, the sauce is slightly sweet and compliments the savory fish. There are 7 sardines in here, and there is not a scale anywhere.
This is a quality product, made with pride.
Nevertheless, I’d be more comfortable buying this tin again if it were priced less than Nuri.
8/10 will buy this tin again.

I do love Mabuti tins, and I keep a stash at the office. They’re perfect snack-size for me.

Looks delicious! Do you make your own calamansi soy sauce? I have been looking for a place to buy either unsweetened calamansi juice or calamansi soy sauce as I haven’t been able to find the fruit itself anywhere near me (Western Massachusetts, USA) if you have any recommendations.
