So my son was pretty bummed he couldn’t help me with the previous cake I made, so we made a cake together for Father’s Day. I let him put the frosting on and then I cleaned it up for him

Not going to lie. I liked it better before the “clean up”. But at least you had fun.
ConstellationMark
I think they way he did it looks great, no clean up required
Other-Door-8894
looks like a superman ice cream cake without the superman ice cream
zoidberg3000
If you scrape again with a clean scraper, it should be brighter and less muddy!
Minimum_Current7108
I think the before was even very nice too!!!
wavesatdogs6
it looks soooo much like the cover/spine of the book gap gardening: selected poems by rosmarie waldrop. lovely!!
The-123-Kid-
Love the cake, but make another with your son! You can do a textured/rustic looking cake, I personally think they have more character and that would be reflected even better with the colour choice here ☺️
Mel-B_50
Loved the look with the bright colors! Should have let him have this one Mom!! At least let him know that we all voted his looked better! 🎖️🏆🎉
And happy Father’s Day to Dad 🥳

Pre clean up looks better, lol, in my humble opinion.
babashishkumba
I kinda like his style more

I like one and two before which of you smoothed it out.

I feel as though I witnessed the desecration of the statue of David
I bet you it was at least super yummy though!

Not cleaned version is honestly so much fun!!

I have to agree, I like it better before it was cleaned 🤣🌈

Middle picture the cake is perfect. Sort of ruined in the last one.

Looks like a Monet painting. Just add lily pads & flowers.

He did such a good job! I let my 9 year old granddaughter help and we always end up with cakes covered in eyeballs.

Hey OP, I think both look pretty in their own way. Your son’s version had cleaner, purer colours with texture(which is an absolute pain in the ass to wrap/cover for storage) but your’s is more formal but a bit moody for a celebration cake. If you want to reach a happier compromise, I’d suggest chilling the cake thoroughly for a while till the buttercream is solid and then scraping the sides with a sharp/thin scraper that has been warmed up. That scrapes off a thin layer of the buttercream and the colours appear more vivid+you get the smooth finish that’s easier to store.
Just search for buttercream marbling techniques on Instagram or YouTube if you want to see in more detail how to do the scraping. It is a very trust the process kind of method, but I can vouch for it working every time and I’ve been decorating with buttercream for over 10 years now.

I liked it before the clean-up. It looked really cool.

Kids got style! What a fun thing to do.
West-Application-375
Looks like a PlayDough party lol
Top-Somewhere-3303
Right on and good bonding and skill building.
I don’t like that the kids sneeze in the prep, half finish, or make things that look asymmetric or free form..but they are kids and improving all the time. I never had that as a kid so they, and your kid already ahead of the game.
I like the 2nd shot with the globby play doh look prior to smear up.
Elebenteen_17
I did one of these not too long ago. One color, then scrape and freeze for a couple minutes, then add another and scrape, repeat.
Bumble_Bee_BB
What a fantastic way to involve your kid! This is so fun!!!
Sweaty-Gopher
It was so much better before the “clean up”
SodiumSellout
This is so fun! One idea for next time is to chill the cake until the icing is no longer tacky and use a paper towel to “pat” the icing into a more even layer. Should keep the colors from mixing or muddying!
FirstAccGotStolen
First thing that came to my mind seeing these cake photos was that Jesus painting meme that lady tried to “fix”
(Sorry OP, I am sure it was delicious)

His decorations were better.
Jnnybeegirl
I think was really cute. I would have left it exactly how he made it. It’s perfect.

Peter Pan & the lost boys would LOVE this. Me too

Great team work!

Pre-cleaning, those bright, bold colors really remind me of playdough. I wasn’t one to eat it as a kid (though I did eat a lot of other non-food items), but I definitely see the appeal of it with this cake.
themombieapocalypse
That’s so sweet! Great looking before and after. I wonder how it would turn out if next time, you chilled the white frosting until very firm and then gouged out little random holes. Then he could put the colored icing in the holes and you could smooth them to be level with the white. That way, it would preserve the less muddled look of the first pictures and it would be easier to store, etc. I think the trend is called terrazzo? In any case, it turned out adorably!

Rufio would approve 🙂

The 2nd pic is perfection!! 3D frosting for the win!
What happened in the 3rd pic?

His version was better.
Flayrah4Life
The before was a Jackson Pollock rendition – glad he had fun. 🙂
