But they couldnt explain what it is.
Its sweet corn. (Delicious)
What is it? Whats it normally used for?

Everything theyve given me has been the best mexican food ive ever had.
Ive considered learning spanish just to hear their story. Theyre such nice people. They make food in their house, and must sell it online. People show up like its a drive thru. Its impressive.

Like if ice came for them,
theyd have to deal with me too.

Lard? Weird for your neighbor to just hand you a container of lard, but that’s what it looks like.

    Forbidden Ice Cream.

Fun story: A sous chef I worked for used an ice cream scooper to make a perfect scoop of lard. They left it in a bowl in the server area. About an hour later, the FoH manager screamed “Who left a scoop of fat out?!” Turns out he thought it was ice cream and actually ate it. Long way of saying, lard will forever be forbidden ice cream to me.

Just ask them for the name on a piece of paper and tell us, now I’m curious

  5. It’s sweet and tastes like corn? If it’s cold then it’s elote ice cream

Helado de Elote? Sweet corn ice cream? If it is, you my friend, have hit the neighbor gold mine. Never move, always smile and wave. And let me tell you buddy, when a Mexican is boxing, or the World Cup is going on, you will want an invite. (I’m this kind of Mexican also)

Like the other person said, my guess would be atole that thickened up, if it has a corn flavor like you say.

Couldn’t think of anything else it would be, and I could see this happening since it’s a thicker substance

The lard guesses are cracking me up. The fact your neighbors *make* food and give you their made food, but this time….? Handed you a cup of loose lard?

What a lovely neighbor situation, OP.

Looks like it’s Atole Gordo to me. Atole Gordo is sort of a cross between atole and sweet tamales. Atole Gordo is also pretty much the same as Jalisco style tamales colados, at least in my experience they’re reallly similar.

EDIT: okay just remembered. Colados = fresh corn, atole gordo = dried corn. So that’s the main difference between the two in my experience.

Sounds like Natilla de Elote to me, made with white corn, not yellow corn. That would give you a Mexican version of Panna cotta (oversimplified explanation, i know), thickened by corn starch and egg, with fresh corn completely blended into the milk until smooth.

Or lard. If we completely disregard your tastebuds, anything you wrote, and that your neighbor sent it over, then it’s obviously lard.

It depends on what it is, because if it’s Atole blanco it has thickened up a lot and would need to be thinned with milk to be drank. However as people mentioned it could be Atole Gordo which is just Atole thickened up on purpose to be eaten as a custardy dessert.

You need to ask them cause it looks like sorbet to me

I thought it was lard to make flour tortillas.

my grandma used to make it it was like a more gelatinous atole – atole de nata? and sometimes she would add orange leaves for flavor
