INDIANAPOLIS (WISH)– Firefighter Tim, a veteran with 22 years of service, shared his hearty firehouse meal recipe during a recent segment, highlighting the camaraderie and tradition of weekend breakfasts at the station.
Tim’s recipe, affectionately dubbed ‘sewer lid,’ combines half a pound of ground sausage, half a pound of bacon, and potatoes, seasoned with smoked paprika, salt, pepper and everything bagel seasoning. This dish is a staple at the firehouse, especially during weekends when firefighters come together for a family-style breakfast.
“I learned to cook at the firehouse, but we really do have a lot of great cooks,” Tim said, acknowledging his colleagues’ culinary skills.
He recommended making a batch large enough to last several days, adding fresh eggs each morning to avoid reheating them.
In addition to the savory breakfast, Tim shared his almond flour muffin recipe, which he developed due to his ulcerative colitis. The muffins include almond flour, butter, eggs, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon, vanilla, honey and maple syrup, offering a healthier alternative for those with dietary restrictions.
Tim also recounted a humorous story about his Achilles injury treatment, where he underestimated the pain of platelet replacement therapy, leaving the doctor’s office in a wheelchair despite arriving without crutches.
Firefighter Tim’s culinary skills not only bring his team together but also provide hearty meals that fuel them for their demanding work.
