My friend worked for them briefly and said the owner was a bit of a bitch.
However I don’t think their response is super rude? It’s a bit unhinged but with no way of knowing how the interaction actually went, it could be that you guys were unhinged too.
lillithfair98
one time at the Broadview location we got two meals/boxes for takeout.
they have a patio with picnic tables and it was completely empty so we decided to sit at the tables to eat our food.
THEY KICKED US OUT, claiming the tables were for dine in customers only (again, of which, there were none). They absolutely wouldn’t budge.
Never went back there again. the food is… fine, but no establishment that treats customers like an annoyance will ever get my business.
FatherSpodoKomodo_
I’ve never heard of these guys before so not sure of their reputation…however, is it not a bit odd asking if someone speaks Spanish in an Latino restaurant, not in a Spanish speaking country? Now the reviewer might be visiting from such a country, and not fluent in English. Though they don’t seem to have bad English based on the review.
kickintheball
Every single dish tastes exactly the same. Hotdog, veg patty, taco. All come with the exact same toppings
ShortHandz
The responses are so horrible that they are funny.
– Also plan to never eat there.

I think at ethnic restaurants, it’s a perfectly valid question for people with a first language other than English to ask whether the waiters are fluent in x language because they’re more comfortable speaking that language e.g. my parents will ask waiters at Chinese restaurants if they can speak Cantonese or Mandarin (there were a few instances where the servers only spoke English), one of favourite Greek cafes have employees that are fluent in Greek and can switch to Greek customers who prefer to speak Greek, etc. There’s a reason why those jobs often have other language requirements. There needs to be more context but if that was the case, I can understand the customer leaving the review that they did.

I love a crazy owner!

AlarmingMonk1619
Without the context just the two exchanges could go either way in making one party the unreasonable one. But having former employees fill in the blanks, in neutral terms, helps to lean the narrative to what might be accurate.

Looks like they’re going through some review bombing. IRL friend claimed it was a solid place to work.
greypusheencat
this is reminding me of Kiss My Pan’s owner responses 😂
Sunshinesonme1009
I love their vegetarian burger – definitely one of the best in town – I have been at least 10 times over the years, on Broadview and Queen East, the staff has always been lovely. The Owner response is snarky but I dont mind a little honesty.

Owner has anger problems but interrogating someone about where they’re from is weird and invasive

I chalked this up to my own learning experience but when the broadview Completo store had just opened, i ordered takeout on Ritual and went by a bit early to pick it up. It wasn’t ready yet but the lady said oh would you like to try an Empanada while you wait? uh, sure i thought, only to be then charged about $5 for a three-bite snack I was kinda expecting to be free. Lesson learned.

Sigh I’ll have to find 🔥 hard shell tacos elsewhere I suppose.

Did Amy’s Baking Company reopen? Gordon?
Fuzzy-Tale8267
Darn, I really liked their loaded grilled cheese when I worked nearby there
Charizard3535
I mean owner has a point it’s pretty weird to expect servers to speak the language just because the restaurant is themed that way. Kind of pretentious really.
BigComfyCouch4
I don’t know. If I was the owner and got a one star review because the food was good, but they had to wait a bit. And there weren’t any Spanish speakers. In *Toronto*. Fuck off with that.
If you go when it’s busy, you’re going to wait. And Spanish speakers eager to work as wait staff aren’t exactly lousy on the ground in southern Ontario. More likely to have a Mandarin, French, Hindi, or Punjabi speaker. It’s Toronto.
TheMatfitz
Went through their other negative reviews to see if there’s a history of responding defensively/rudely towards customers – there is none, quite the opposite in fact. Makes me think the restaurant deserves some benefit of the doubt in this story.
CookLevel10
As someone working in the industry for over 20 years, that response is totally valid.
I’ve never ate there, but if you’re upset about rude staff and the food was still decent, why are you giving 1 star? Did it suck that much that you need to lower the rating of the restaurant because you were offended in the moment? Customers, especially in big cities, will always feel entitled to leave their opinions without actually feeling the consequence of their actions. It takes a lot to run a restaurant. It takes even more to stand up for yourself when that customer could have just left a three star and said the staff don’t speak Spanish which is kind of weird.
Of course there is context we are all missing, but the title of this post and the people that find this kind of response to an extremely reactionary review, should not eat out. I couldn’t tell you how many people I’ve cooked for that barely even look at the menu and then get upset that it’s not what they were expecting.
The general consensus for most restauranteurs and cooks is that we need to constantly cater to every whim our customers have. I would call anyone out for writing a 1 star review, if there isn’t much context other than they found one of the staff rude, so everyone needs to suffer.
Think before you post.

Yikes, especially the replies to 1 star ratings saying they’re from door dash drivers. I pass by them often when I’m in the neighbourhood, but this is definitely off putting.
I eat here often but at the smaller location on Coady Ave. Food is wicked good. People have been great too.
But I’ve never met the owner, only his father, who is a lovely man that used to sell Turkish towels out of the building that is now Pasaj.

I go to Completo on Broadview a fair bit for lunch. (Good food, btw)
If this is a recent review, there’s a bit of context that might explain the response. Last week I saw a new person working there. (The staff are usually the same for months so a new face stands out) A brown girl with an Indian accent. If people were harassing her, I kinda get being pissed.
Also, their whole thing is that it’s a combo of legit Chilean sandwiches plus highly inauthentic Mexican food, because that’s what people expected Latino food to be when the owner was a kid in 1980s Port Hope (or somewhere like that). They serve hard shell tacos for Christ’s sake. Seems absurd to expect Spanish speaking servers when that’s the vibe.
JaXm
To be fair, I haven’t seen any other responses, and can’t really judge, but this one …. this one actually kinda seems reasonable to me.
I once went to a German restaurant and a “friend” kd mine refused to speak to the waitress in anything other than German. I ended up tipping her 20 bucks because I couldn’t imagine having to deal with his dick ass all night.
Much-Bother1985
I don’t support businesses like these that respond rudely. It just shows her completely ungrateful for their customers and have no customer service skills.

keepplaylistsmessy
Sorry but that response seems fine and it was good of them to put the customer’s situation in a clearer context.

I just checked their menu.
Only two items on it seem close to what you’d find in Chile, but then add or change an ingredient that makes it odd.
heart_aflame
I’m sure the restaurant sucks, but that is a very annoying question.

My grandmother told me a story once of her being in a small Asian restaurant and asking the server what the Calligraphy on the front said: “I don’t speak Chinese ma’am”
Fabulous-Guava2369
I go to the Completo on Cody all the time and they have never been anything but nice and the food is great. It seems kind of passive aggressive to expect people to speak Spanish there because they sell the cuisine or asking where they are from. They have people from all walks of life working at their stores. Lay off

Completo overreaction in my opinion.

It took me a few minutes to realize why the name of the Restaurant is Completo! We were just in Chile last January to do Patagonia hike, and started in Santiago, Chile, and we tried the famous Completo there, in Fuente Alemana, where Anthony Bourdain dined, and it was great! Now I am intrigued to try this restaurant out but hesitating because of the response from the owner.
