3276 M Street, NW previously home to Dean and Deluca
From a press release:
“A collaboration years in the making between James Beard Award-winning restaurateur Stephen Starr and legendary LA chef Nancy Silverton will finally culminate in the opening of the Michelin-starred Osteria Mozza in Washington DC. The first East Coast location of the restaurant is a major coup for Washingtonians, spotlighting the regional Italian fare that has made Mozza one of LA’s most important restaurants and Silverton one of the world’s most respected chefs.
Located at 3276 M St. NW in the distinctive, standalone former Dean & Deluca space in tony Georgetown, Osteria Mozza will encompass 20,000 square feet dedicated to rustic and traditional Italian food, with a marble-topped Mozzarella Bar, two private dining areas, and a feature you’ll find only at the DC Mozza:
a colorful market showcasing specialty olive oils, spices, fresh fruit and vegetables, jarred and tinned Italian delicacies, sundries and much more, with each item handpicked by Silverton herself.
Osteria Mozza is the brainchild of James Beard Award-winning chef, author and restaurateur Silverton, who opened the original with Joe Bastianich in 2007 and went on to shape modern LA food culture, as well as Americans’ broader appreciation for wood-fired cooking, handmade pastas, and regional Italian methods.
Osteria Mozza DC will be a showcase for the iconic dishes that made Silverton a global culinary star. She brings some of the restaurant’s biggest hits with her from Mozza’s perch on Melrose Avenue: Her crisp, stracchino-stuffed Focaccia di Recco – a Stephen Starr obsession – makes an appearance on this menu; so does Nancy’s Favorite Trio, with delicate mounds of mozzarella di bufala draped in Cantabrian anchovies, sun-dried tomatoes and peppers, accompanied by Silverton’s crisp, golden brown fett’unta (think of it as the best garlic bread you’ve ever tasted). Fans are certain to flock to the beloved Nancy’s Caesar, a surprising deconstructed take on the classic salad, and the legendary tagliatelle pasta with hearty oxtail ragu.
The bar is just as devoted to Italian flavors and producers: Osteria Mozza offers an Italian-focused wine list that spotlights classic, novel and compelling offerings produced in Italy’s Piedmont, Tuscany, Campania and Sicily winemaking regions. A highly curated selection of Champagnes rounds out the list.
Osteria Mozza is located in Georgetown Park retail development, occupying a historic M Street NW market dating back to 1865 that has been spectacularly re-envisioned by New York-based design studio Roman and Williams as a modern, convivial multipurpose space. Gorgeous, arched windows look out onto M Street and fill the space with light, while gleaming terrazzo floors play a showstopping role at Mozza, perfectly complementing the marble tables and bar tops, dark woods and flashes of exposed brick. The Solarium, with its floor-to-ceiling windows, turns the very idea of outdoor dining on its head – by bringing it indoors. Meanwhile, a mezzanine-level private dining room overlooking the main dining floor makes for an intimate, elevated space to break bread or host events with up to 20 guests.
Osteria Mozza will be open for dinner service Sunday through Thursday from 5pm to 10pm, and Friday and Saturday from 5 pm to 11 pm. Lunch and brunch service will be added in the coming weeks.”
