Few foods are as beloved in America as pizza and French fries. Both exist in totally separate worlds, rarely, if ever, meeting in the same meal. But the frozen ‘za purveyor, TombStone, is about to change that. The brand just released French Fry Style Crust Pizza in two flavors: Loaded Bacon Cheddar and Chili Cheese. The main attraction is the potato-based crust, combining the best of pizza and French fries in one bite. As a fan of both iconic comfort foods, I had to try the pizza for myself.

The instructions were simple: I placed the pizza onto the lower oven rack at 425°F and let it cook for 20-22 minutes. Easy enough. After getting the pizzas onto the cutting board, I was first hit with two completely contrasting smells. The Chili Cheese flavor gave off a very strong scent of meat and peppers. The Loaded Bacon Cheddar gave that appetizing bacon smell that everybody loves.

Texturally, the pizzas did not feel much different from a normal pizza, which threw me off since I had expected a fry-like texture. The crust cooked unevenly, so it was difficult to cut as I got closer to the center. Though I cooked it for the full 22 minutes, I’d suggest cooking it even longer.

The pizzas were solid overall. The Chili Cheese flavor was similar to the kind of chili that typically tops a hot dog, and the hamburger meat and red onion complemented it nicely. The Loaded Bacon Cheddar was heavy on the bacon, which is always a win in my book. The crust didn’t have much to do with French fries, as it was just a layer of potato with no homage to any fry shapes or styles, like a crinkle cut or waffle. As a fan of TombStone pizzas, I didn’t notice a major difference between the flavor of this crust and the crusts they usually sell. The idea, however, of a French fry-based crust is definitely one I will keep my eye out for in the future. The possibilities are endless.
