PORTLAND, Ore. (KATU) — From Korean to Indian to Philly cheesesteaks, people who live, work and play in North Portland now have another option for food.

Mireaya, who works in the area, says, “I ended up seeing some folks working on this space, and so I stopped, and I said, ‘Hey, are you putting in food carts?’ And they said yes. And so, I’ve been telling everyone in our office that we have new food carts. It’s a big deal for Delta Park.”

This is an area known for not having a lot.

“It’s definitely a food desert. And what I mean by a food desert is there aren’t really a lot of places to get like fresh cooked or fresh food,” Mireaya says. “So, there’s like one fast-food restaurant, one Dollar Tree. There’s just not a lot of places to eat in this area.”

The hope is that this becomes a destination for visitors.

Right now, there are only four food trucks in the lot. Two seem to be open.

Delta Carts management says nine will be open at some point.

KATU spoke to Tim who lives in the area. He says he’ll be coming back.

“Well, I like the seating. The seating arrangements, the umbrellas for the hot days. I like the restroom. You don’t see too many restrooms at the food cart areas,” he says.
