hello! I recently went to Tokyo and had this tasty breakfast. I really liked that side dish on the right side (bright green) next to the miso soup, but I’m not sure what it was. Sorry the full dish is not in frame, but I’m hoping that small bit is enough to examine. Would anyone be able to help identify it? Thank you in advance!!

Could you at least post the name of the restaurant?

describing the taste or texture would help

also name of the place so we can check what they serve

  3. Would you say it’s some kind of rice? I see what looks like grains

Likely a type of *tsukemono* (pickle) as that is what is commonly served with rice and miso soup for breakfast. Restaurants often rotate different vegetables though so it’s hard to tell exactly what kind from the pic. Describing the taste and texture could help more.

Looks like it could be daikon oroshi (grated daikon radish), which you would usually drizzle on some soy sauce to mix with your rice or other dishes

  6. It could be something with artificial coloring, so the green color doesn’t necessarily help with identification.

Like others have said, I’m thinking it was some sort of pickle. However, I’m still going to throw this out there—was it spicy and citrusy at all? If so, it might be yuzu kosho, a condiment. Yuzu kosho is usually a much more muted green, but I have a friend who made it at home once and it was the same color as your picture when it was fresh.
