at the fire station The guys we met before and we went together to Mrs. Archontoula to give her food and water Now their shift starts over here And up here is the observatory Look at the view that’s OK It has an incredible view from here You can see from one POA the whole southern part down the island as it makes a turn And this mountain here is the prophet Ilias or otherwise or Olympus from behind is the village of Olympus Look at the forest The ideal spot to supervise the whole area This is what he does and says 40 years the fire has been gone from here from behind Yes A very strong wind and he turned it and it has captions All this was green Seriously this was one of the best forests of Olympus And in general the carpathos had a good forest We are talking there was a big fire then Very big fire I could not you I remember I was 6 years old at the time Yes And I remember that orange red that was the sky All of this All of me All of [music] Hello guys Good job Good job Hello we were swept a lot and I Good luck Where are you doing Good bye Hello We’re off Let’s go now to Olympus The road that connects the southern part of the island with the was opened in the 80s Until then there was no access by car to the northern part of the island You could only go by boat from Diafani It was like another island like another world Basically it is like another world even now When you come as a visitor to Karpathos you have the experience of the southern part and then you go up to the north and you feel that you have been to another island that you have been to another world on another planet So let’s go and get to know the planet Olympus Karpathos appeared one of the most famous mountainous island villages of all Greece the diamond of the Karpathos look at the beauty how the houses are perched on the ridge between the two mountains built on the slopes of the mountain of the prophet Elias which used to be called Olympus that is where Olympus got its name from the mountain let’s explore it let’s go to meet Olympus of the Karpathos [music] At the entrance of the village we are greeted by the three pillars of Olympus One two three The third is the woman of Olympus The woman of Olympus as a pillar of tradition calling the ancient ancestors from Vrikounda and Isyros for support in silent protest holding the baby in the traditional sheet and gazing anxiously at the deserting village [music] Traditionally each family built a church and had its own wind talk [music] Monument to fallen Olympians St. Nikolaos is up and here is St. Kyriaki Hello What are you doing Bon appetite We loved you for the food Yes That’s why mother-in-law Lett loves you traditional Olym food goat rice and potatoes This is what we do in churches and this is what we also do at weddings We cook everything we can We bless donuts goat chicken everything [music] [applause] Hello Mrs. Maria Hello Hello Welcome What are you doing well fine How many years ago did we meet 15 years ago Yes 15 We made the breads The traditional breads Yes Yes The things you make for you are lost Yes And we do the ones in the Saints Arton when you came back What do you have here bakery restaurant E I have Yes With a small shop I have here E nice How are things going here in All my Glory to God Good The marriage is traditional Well now my child we have now two-three years four to get married Really Well now people are re-inventing movies Ah I understand now I know things You were small Very small Well now I came with the little ones Now you came with the family Then you weren’t the married one Yes Yes I had seen the show afterwards and it was very nice Thank you very much You are one of the best Thank you very much Be well Hello John Hello Happiness Welcome to Olympus You are from here Yes This is where you were born Of course This is where I was born I’ve been recording the life of the village for many years Because if you were here and you saw what recording is You stop the death You stop from the voice to the laugh because you know what the tradition is It’s the most passionate village in Greece It has been proclaimed by the cultural proscan Olympus And so I because I grew up and have memories, I saw that what you are trying to save is actually saving the next generations and so many videos that I upload on YouTube are kept by young people . Be well I say this child didn’t go anywhere not to go around the world This edimasia is everyday over here Everyday It’s what you wear no matter what So So So Perfect And in Athens and Rhodes and used to be in America Okay because of the work they took her out to America but now they should leave and go to Athens Rhodes you see they say Carpathia but everyone says pis is the only one that keeps [music] Here in this shop we had cooked with mom’s kitchen before then 18-20 years ago Psaka well you Mrs. Anna Yes Mrs. Anna Goats Yes With goats Me with macaroons Perfect A c came again to Olipo E of course let’s not come to Olipo bravo but I want you to come again to Avlona what is the mandinaa you say What is this called eight Yes that’s what she said that’s what she said [music] these macaroons are the macaroons How many years have we had the shop here 46 years Macaroons in the same way The traditional pasta here in Olympus Onion butter and cheese The great moment after so many years to eat the authentic macaroons of Olympus Ocho The handmade pasta of the Carpathians with onion and cheese the local Miracle Tell me what taste is this here in Olipo you become macaroons What does it say What is a poem Awesome Marina what is the secret of the taste The cheese and the onion with the burnt oil that falls from above It also has butter It also has butter When the village was full of people how many people did it once have over 2.5 i.e. 2,500 for sure Why didn’t they just live in Olipo and outside me to be and around in Avlona We also had people in Sharia and in all these places that are pastures with mothers me and why does necessity make you turn stone into bread [music] Giannis is an excellent artist We also went to see his workshop here where he creates his works of art The revolt of the women of Olympus When the Italians wanted to take a census they took them hunting with the spade that they put the bread in the oven Italians want to write down how many people it has Population Census E because they knew they were getting a mule demanded how much each one has with the appraisers Someone told them here that they will take your male children maybe if you have two or three And so the women for 10-20 days did not let them go from house to house to take an inventory and resisted Let’s go higher Let’s go to the church And now we went out to almost the highest point of the village to Panagia Here the square is called the Assumption Square of Siotoko and this is the beautiful temple that you can see from any point around [music] From here the church and this here was the old town hall The old town hall of Olympus Olympos used to have an independent community but then they all united Karpathos became a municipality and now Olypoos belongs to the municipality of Karpathos This here was the town hall in the time of the Italians The town hall is over there The cathedral church of Olympus is dedicated to the esteem of Eotokou It is located in the center of the village in the district of Selai and that is why it is also known as Selagiotissa In the past it was burned by a fire and for this reason many lithographs have been destroyed Nevertheless, many efforts have been made to restore it and today it is in a generally good condition Ombos was founded by the inhabitants of the ancient Vrikoussa or Vrikus or Brukuntas which is located north of here on the coast Because pirate raids started to be a significant problem the residents sought shelter further up in the mountains and they came and founded Olympus And this is how the legacy of Vricus of Vrikousa came here over to Olymou Keep your ancestors alive Never offend them Chreas to respect them and overcome them This is also individual in each of our homes But also because it was the square it had to be a message for the whole world And because it is from Homer and from Karazaki That is to say it is the same reasoning that we have to spend a good time go a little bit further than the previous ones [music] Good evening Good evening How are you here How nice you are sitting Well nice We are not here The wind is blowing here The wind blows and we are sitting over there [music] This is the main street probably the main street that goes from the church to the square here there are all shops what are you doing good good how are you I am glad to see you after how many years are we happy we are 18 18 you are good you continue the tradition always always since when do you make these shoes these shoes I learned them from my father I just left school and before school I did this job Yes I mean I was playing work Yes Yes I took a little skin to be curious I was looking at my father what did he do And then my father tells me after you take the skin my child drew something on it Cut something and it will you see you’re going to make something And then he tells me you can’t even sew a leg Here are our legs This is finished Red is because the uniform is black top and bottom we put the red bright colors which is assembled cut and sewn on the girls on the leg Men wear matching And men matching and natural This is a black It’s a man’s which is also sewn and sewn on the leg of each Single girls wear this Married or grown up the design of the slipper is different I don’t have it now but it is different These are hand made They are nail nailed This is what our bride will marry traditionally These are the tools the basic ones that our chisels use and it is basic to say that these jobs should be taken care of by the state itself I really want to say that I was lucky to sit with my father who my father did not give me he brought every little bit of what he took away He wanted to let it leave it alive as it was taken from his own father And I would like to tell the new children that deal with the tradition you will not lose Tradition will give you traditional art will give you a lot You will have values and that value will go even further Let’s keep what we have our identity Mr. John thank you very much You had a great father Thank you very much Be well I always remember him I have him in the pictures here He really accompanies me every day Hello Hello Thank you Thank you Keep different hermopylae but they also have their meaning here with the tradition Be well Always happy Hello Hello Thank you You are lucky Yes What are you doing Do you remember me the other time we met 16 years ago We were of course in the kitchen In the macaroons In the macaroons Dolls in traditional costumes Here her Here the one I’m wearing now is her and this one is from the winter This is the nail and those from the country This here is the summer one Yes I here is the winter one with the kawaii kawaii they say this and I do it and on the mugs it’s with the kawaii Look at a normal coat I do Nice Yes Nice you do it with me lady Your aura [music] let’s honor the tradition too So be well E karkalithi Thank you very much very happy Very very happy Come on Wonderful Harika Come on hello Hello good Harika think about it Thank you Good Little break from the walk we take to the legendary Olympus to eat a champion Our favorite kurasan with afratsliata and hazelnut praline filling [music] So let’s go to the wrinkles of mythology because he is the strong one and let’s write all this down and as school continues the road because the children are decreasing, we thought it was right to start putting the knowledge out of the comment like we did in ancient Greece when we used to put the threads the tyrant and he took his wife says how are we going to continue since we have no other people and he took it from below the bones are the stones the stone throws the stone and out comes a light l stone a bright stone and out comes the Greek you see here and here comes out the primogeniture the first is the how we were born in mythology and one who goes down like this will become a better person so the purpose of art that my father told me besides art that is beautiful must also be beneficial beneficial beneficial i.e. you pass through here the school closes because it has no children but going to school you learn all the knowledge on the way to school [music] Look here a work of art John has made It is Odysseus from here stormy sea From here calm Misery ignorance Knowledge happiness Man’s destiny Dys f The name dys has dys and f in it Misery and happiness ignorance and knowledge John thank you very much for the perfect tour Thank you Thank you for the beautiful things you brought us Look how fate has you now the two are called lucky I mean don’t be lucky My name has something from Odysseus Yes of course [music] Ok What a view this is how perfect movies from here The Aegean Sea and that dramatic western coastline of the Karpathos Ok The best time to be in Olivos Beautiful village but at this time it’s prettier [music] And that little church down there is Christ they say is where you’ll see the best sunset in Karpathos How are you looking Very nice I’m traditional How is the place for sunset Oh perfect Perfect Ideal So somewhere here we close this wonderful day in Carp We will stay here tonight and continue our specifics tomorrow morning Good night Hello Hello [music] Hello Euteichi here Good morning We are in Karpathos and specifically a surprise still in Bpoo Actually the OI we explored yesterday is up there We are in the back and it is the primary school over here and here we are in a perfect place called Archipelagos and it has autonomous seals houses where travelers are defeated [music] We do what we urge every traveler who comes to Karpathos to spend at least one night in the northern part of the island Because there are so many things to see here that a day is not enough The clouds cover the top of the prophet Elijah and it is like the earth And now we will go down to the transom [music] We reached the transom The vineyard of Olympus is the port on the north side of of the island It looks east again and here in the transom the boat of the line also comes and moors. When you come to the carpao you can disembark either transparent or at the wells in the central port Here there are many taverns restaurants and cafes Let’s go for a walk What are you doing hello Hello I’m your name is Nikos This is where you are from Here I’m from Nice But I’m also glad to see you here too Be well I’m glad Nice You go around the world my child Yes Yes And inside and outside Yes So you have a lot of knowledge Come and say hello to you this way I see you again Welcome to our village Let’s go to let’s see here the traditional coffee shop. No [music] Sharia with the boat Come on We went up and up or not up there Ah I don’t know did you go up up there But since you came I’ve lost my head Really Listen Ah well I’ll see you later Hello Thank you from us on time Thank you Be well Hello whoever lifts the big stones sinks These on the stones I threw as much as I could On these stones I loved As long as I put these on the stones in my destiny George Seferis So from here in Diafani we’ll get on a boat and go even further north to explore We’ll go to Saria We’re on the boat We’re on board We’re leaving Diafani Hello C We’re leaving We’re leaving We’re leaving [music] We’re making a short stop to see a cave that has here Okay All this coastline of karpatho is magic Very dramatic and wild And there in the background it appeared There in is the strait between carpatho hissaria and north is the saria we will go next Let’s go inside the cave It’s big Say OK Perfect cave Look here and the water is crystal [music] We arrived at saria This here is the main beach There on the top there is a settled village Argos Behind the church of Agios Zacharias that we can see here from the beach there is a wonderful small boat The scenery is incredible Look at the breams right and left Here there are some old pirate houses Down here there was an old pirate village That’s what the place is called Sarakiniko It has houses over there arches caves [music] We got off Saria and we were welcomed here by two wonderful donkeys [music] This particular beach is called palaces and according to the historians here it was the spot where the ancient city of Aria was located called Saros Strabo has a somewhat controversial theory that says that over here there was an ancient city called Nisyros Anyway this here spot was the ancient city There were various ruins around and it is said that with a great earthquake it opened up here over there the beach and the canyon were torn apart and the city was destroyed The inhabitants from here started to go towards Karpathos Saria was slowly abandoned There is the strait between Saria Karpathos which is about 100 m of water but in ancient times these two islands were bathed It was an island and for this reason Karpathos was Tetrapolis One of the four ancient cities of Karpathos was Saros Here beyond Saria the palace beach We took the path that goes up and enters the faraki Through the faraki the river passes With us is George Georgara again Hi [music] Look how the scenery is here Okay These rocks have holes in them They may be ancient tombs [music] It has a regular made path that goes up to the village It goes through the faraki What an incredible route It must have been a lot of animals here over in Sharia especially when it was inhabited by people Now lately some shepherds are coming some who have estates over here but it is not officially inhabited say we will now go to the village and find some resident [music] We came out of the gorge and we have almost reached the old abandoned village In Argos that is what this village was called and it is still called Here it has terraces like this of course they had fields When the village was on top of it and there were many people here they grew their food We passed through Argos Very atmospheric so it suits you It escapes you a little heart How in this place once had life and now it has not a single inhabitant But the place as a place is beautiful and worth a visit If you come carpathian come excursion and if you have courage climb to the top And if you get to the top walk a little further to the chapel of Agios Zacharias It’s so magical Down there we were [music] We got back in our boat but we’re not leaving Sharia yet Let’s go a little further north for a swim on a magical beach [music] Perfect waters And after the walk this swim was just right Sharia Carpathians Once they were united Once was a Our next stop at tristom A very well-protected natural bay in the north of the Karpathos which the Italians in the second world war used as a small anchor station It is called tristom because at the entrance of the bay there are two large rocks that create three openings three mouths In tristom there is a small coastal settlement inhabited seasonally and right next to it you can also see the old abandoned buildings of the Italians In this bay the settlement has houses for residents from Ubo who mainly deal with Alia and come here in the summer months. The easiest way to get here is by boat, but if you are into hiking, there is also a path . of the most impressive locations in all of Karpathos [music] Our next stop at the north-western tip of Karpathos The historic Vrukunda The ancient Vryic one of the four ancient cities of Karpathos One of the most sacred and powerful energy spots on the island One of the spots in the southeast Aegean where the ancient Greek civilization flourished in the 4th century BC We left the boat at the pier and we went up the path to reach the place where the ancient city was located. Here the ruins of the ancient Vrykos are visible. This place seems to have been inhabited since the Minoan and Mycenaean times. On this peninsula there is a necropolis and ruins of an ancient Greek and Hellenistic settlement, while many inscriptions have also been found. its inhabitant was the doctor Minocritos This ancient city was abandoned sometime after the 7th century due to the Arab raids but it is also said to have been destroyed by an earthquake The ruins of the old settlements stretch all over the peninsula even on the highest points The landscape is completely wild and unguarded Steep peaks rise behind the peninsula while in the background the nearest settlement is the avlona From there there is a path that goes down to Vrukunda and to walk it you need about an hour At the north-eastern end of the peninsula there is a natural cave inside which there is a church Agios Ioannis ei Vrikoundas [music] On this isolated edge of the Karpathos on the coast opposite the peninsula where Ancient Vrkunda was located is the so-called pelektos aros It is a natural pool carved into the rocks of the sea Legend has it that the queen of ancient Vrikounda asked for this pool to be created for her baths [music] With that and with that we got back on the boat to go back to the transom from where we started in the morning As soon as we got back we went together for dinner Fried anchovy after a day at sea wants food from the sea And this is a so-called agradi or agriadi So they say here it also has a perfect sauce that is cooked Very complex it is very tasty All fresh And these here shrimps The real shrimps Carpathian shrimp No one can eat just one I eat very fresh squid Say it is the softest squid I have ever eaten Hello Come to say goodbye to you What are you doing Ah I remember you now that I tell you again where do you remember me from here we made the carts what did we have torak Mrs. Maria I find the people we met 20 years ago we are happy you haven’t changed at all thank you I’m very happy by the way by the way thank you very much we were glad to see you and me hello hello kalar nice now we leave the slide and go upstairs We went up we went down and we arrived at Avlona which is built in a plateau between the mountains Avlona has always been traditionally the orchard of Olympus Good evening What are you doing Good evening You are good Your name is Maria This is where you are from I live in Olympus and we came to cut some grapes now Those who sit here the people of Avlona Yes They have Nice I have a vine here and I came to cut a few grapes. Come on, go. Hello, Mrs. Maria. Good luck. Thank you. Please be well. The best treat. A fresh grape [music] Here in Avlona, all the houses have a threshing floor. What are you doing ? it’s easy to go from the land to the finished bun It’s a lot of work A lot of work A lot of work A lot of work Nice Perfect Thank you for showing me the process here Let’s go see a house We came almost to the end of the village to see what a house used to be like We haven’t messed with it at all inside Here are sleeping dormitories All the houses since they were built had a cistern below that is as big as the house and on the roof there was a way to collect the rainwater What was left of the straw after they took the wheat, barley, etc., they put it straight inside for the animals to eat. What are you doing? You’re good. We’re back. Well, here I find you in a nice place. Welcome. You’re here too. We cooked the goat. The stuffed goat was next to the oven in the oven. Here’s the oven. Here we made the goat 18 years ago. How are the years going by? yes, how are they doing, but the oven is here, quickly, quickly, this process is to roast the wheat, grind it, make it into bread . artichokes It has more artichokes than an egg and freshly picked oregano on top Wow Aulonic artichoke You are never disappointed by the cuisine here beyond Karpathos and specifically here in the Olympus area Wow Thank you for the nice things And we hope to meet again Yes Of course I hope we don’t have to spend 20 years again Be well Bye Bye Hello Goodbye Goodbye Hello, that’s it. We say goodbye to Avlona. We return to Olpos, where we will stay the night . 739 m altitude Look at the view Clouds come and go Sometimes they clear and the scenery is incredible one of the best moments we have experienced with Happy Traveler Look here [music] There is also a myth about the name Olympus Where did it come from because this mountain was called Olympus and then the village was also called Olympus The myth says that once upon a time the ancient Carpathians started from here they went to Olympus in Pieria They went for a walk I don’t know an excursion They liked it so much They were enchanted that they decided to steal the gods and bring them here Listen to this Because the Carpathians took the gods of Olympus they were called Arpathians and that’s where the name Karpathos came from The ancient Arpathians who grabbed the Gods in Olympus and brought them here to Olympus Karpathou On this top [music] Look here Water is collected without rain from the humidity [music] Nice Let’s make up a little bit of the embers we burned on the way up Eat a viola energy bar It’s also gyro It’s a sugar-free cereal bar with dark chocolate pieces Good when the sun comes out from behind the clouds it’s magic The best breakfast with the best view At the best point of the Karpathos [music] And here we are at the pillar of the geographic service of the army Here is the top of the mountain Another peak that we conquer with Happy Traveler Another peak that we bring you to with our show Together we have traveled all these years to the most unlikely locations of our country Here at the top of Olympus in the Karpathos we are at 718 m altitude I was wrong before it wasn’t 739 it was 718 718 is the right one. It may not be the highest mountain in Karpathos, but it is the most impressive. It has a very special and beautiful shape. And up here, this scene with the clouds is completely divine. Well, somewhere here, we say hello. Thank you for being our companions for today. our good mood Hello [music] Where are you Where are you Where are you Where are you I ate the whole world to find you Where are you Where are you Where are you Are you baby sweet [music] [laughs] [music] [music]

One of my preferred greek island…thank you Efty! Greeting from Italy! ❤🙏
Very disappointing series on karpathos. You devoted time to an unwell, unclean old woman in an abandoned village instead of spending 5 minutes to show us the literal capital of the island! Not even an evening stroll by the limani, which is one of the nicest experiences as a tourist. All of the bars and restaurants in Pigadia were simply skipped.
