TOMS RIVER, N.J. — The Crystal Diner, a longtime fixture at 2 Route 37 East known for its round-the-clock service and expansive American menu, has officially closed its doors, marking the end of an era for local residents and travelers passing through Ocean County.
Operating for decades, the diner gained a reputation for its red booths, chrome finishes, and lengthy menu featuring everything from omelettes and burgers to wraps and specialty salads.
The diner’s 24/7 hours made it a go-to for commuters, families, and late-night crowds.
While Toms River has historically been home to several diners bearing the “Crystal” or “Toms River” name, including locations on Route 37 West and Whittier, the Route 37 East diner has become the most prominent, developing a dedicated following in the community. It stood out for its consistent service and classic diner experience.
In May, the restaurant quietly shut down, with local social media confirming the closure. “I think they have announced their final day of service as some time in May but yes, Crystal Diner is on its way out,” one Reddit user noted at the time.
Others reported the building being repainted and signage removed as preparations began for the next tenant.
The closure has been reflected in several roundups of recent New Jersey restaurant shutdowns, further signaling the end of one of the town’s staple eateries.
“Big things are coming to Crystal Diner! We’re closing our doors for a short time to make way for a bold transformation—new name, fresh vibe, and a menu that’s better than ever. Think your favorite American breakfasts alongside exciting new flavors and vibrant Mediterranean dishes. A whole new experience is on the way, and we can’t wait to welcome you back to something truly unforgettable,” the owners posted on their Google profile.
GAL Mediterranean Cuisine takes over location
The familiar diner structure at 2 Route 37 East is now home to GAL Mediterranean Cuisine, which has already begun operations at the site under a fully refreshed interior and exterior.
GAL Mediterranean Cuisine brings a different culinary focus, replacing American diner fare with a Mediterranean menu. According to its digital profiles, the establishment emphasizes fresh, regionally inspired dishes—marking a shift in both ownership and concept for the location.
GAL’s arrival adds to the growing diversity of dining options along the Route 37 corridor, a busy stretch linking Toms River’s downtown and surrounding neighborhoods.
