We attempted onigiri. Gave up. Made rice pie instead.
It's katsu mayo on the inside; not that that redeems our actions.

This rice pie is wild, you belong here, congrats!

I get my hands wet and salt them to compress the rice so it doesn’t stick to my hands! Better luck next time !

I regularly fail in the kitchen, so I give you props for still creating something awesome. I want some. 🍙

Delicious. There are molds, but I like to save the spam can to make musubi. You could make musunigiri

Idk what I expected a rice pie to look like but that first swipe made me laugh my ass off. Looks delicious, would eat!

Onigiri protip: buy a cheap mold off amazon. Makes it so much easier.

i don’t think your stomachs would’ve been able to tell the difference either way lol.
but! if you want tips for how to shape the onigiri, here’s what i do:
– lay out a piece of plastic wrap on the counter, a 10″ square usually works
– lay down a couple small scoops of rice, and press flat and add a tablespoon of filling in the middle.
– (you may want gloves or high heat tolerance for this part) grab the edges of the wrap and bring it together, kinda like a dumpling, and form a ball.
– press and shape it together while it’s in the plastic wrap to get the iconic triangle shape
– set it down and carefully remove the plastic, and then wrap the most unstable looking side in a small bit of nori.
boom 🙂

Well, there was an attempt, which is good!
Any lesson learned, plans for further attempts, what you would and wouldn’t do, etc?

I’m just trying to figure out what possibly went wrong in the first place, haha. It looks like you are using short/medium grain, which is correct. However, the close up looks like the grains of rice are way too wet, so it’s possible the rice/water ratio during the cooking process was potentially incorrect? Unless it’s too wet because mayo got mixed directly into the rice? It also helps to let the rice cool off and dry a little bit in a shallow tray as long as you’re shaping when it’s still warm.
Usually the plastic molds shouldn’t need plastic wrap, but it’s good to wet it a little bit before scooping in the rice (which wouldn’t have helped in this case since the rice seems too wet already). I prefer shaping onigiri by hand and plastic wrap is more helpful for that process. Good attempt, though! I bet next time will be better with more experience.

Ahaha, reminds me of failing at California rolls. The result wasn’t pretty, but it tasted great.

Good pivot! I probably would’ve just gotten frustrated and ordered in

They make Onigiri molds. It’s kind of cheating, but why not?
snacks_headroom
It’s better than what I can put together.

Did you put oil or a little water on your hands? Did you use cling film to line the mold? Or cling film wrap the rice and shape it with your hands?
notabigmelvillecrowd
The rice looks a little goopy, how many times did you wash it? Sometimes a little extra washing will do the trick to make sure you’ve got the right consistency in your rice. Also maybe a little too much water.

This is some “Brock making Jelly-Filled Donuts” level cooking resourcefulness.

Use the mold only for the rice add the Nori after you take it out also use less rice. Little rice on bottom add filling then add the rest till filled. The pie looks like a great Idea but try Onigirazu ( sandwich ) version

People do make sushi bakes, that’s kinda close to one.
