NORTHDALE — Aldi opened its newest Tampa Bay location June 12, continuing the German grocer’s rapid expansion into former Winn-Dixie stores across Florida.
The store at 15692 N. Dale Mabry Highway in the Northdale Promenade shopping plaza opened at 9 a.m. June 12, occupying the space of the former Winn-Dixie that closed in early September for a nine-month renovation.
Aldi welcomed its first 100 customers with gift bags containing groceries, including two bags containing $100 and $500 gift cards. The store had a soft opening June 11, drawing dozens of shoppers eager to take advantage of Aldi’s low prices and no-frills shopping model.
Like other Aldi locations, the Northdale store features the popular “Aldi Finds” aisle — sometimes called the “Aisle of Shame” by fans — offering rotating selections of inexpensive and unique items ranging from seasonal decor and home goods to kitchen gadgets and pet supplies.

The opening follows Aldi’s March 2024 acquisition of Jacksonville-based Southeastern Grocers Inc., parent company of the Winn-Dixie and Harveys supermarket chains. The discount grocer announced plans to convert some of the 400 stores in those chains to Aldi locations, beginning in the second half of 2024.
Aldi, headquartered in Batavia, Illinois, operates about 2,400 U.S. stores. The Southeastern Grocers acquisition is part of an ambitious plan to add 800 stores nationwide by 2028 through new openings and conversions.
Winn-Dixie’s history traces back to the 1920s. The company established its Jacksonville headquarters in 1944 and adopted the Winn-Dixie Stores Inc. name in 1955. Financial struggles in the early 2000s led to bankruptcy in 2005, followed by a 2012 merger with Bi-Lo Holdings to form Southeastern Grocers. The company filed for bankruptcy again in 2018 and canceled plans for a 2020 initial public offering.
Other area Aldi locations include Westchase (10419 Sheldon Road), Town ’N Country (8521 W. Hillsborough Ave.) and Lake Magdalene (14933 N. Florida Ave.).
The remainder of the former Winn-Dixie space remains vacant with no announced plans for future tenants.
