1) I've been to Angel's a few times and, overall, I think they're a solid, TJ-style taco stand but it was always "this was decent." Last week though, I went on the later end than normal for me (9pm+) and maybe it's some psychological "late night taco" vibe but man, were they good that night.
My wife and I both got vampiros: mine was with cabeza — which I hadn't gotten at Angel's before — and my wife got al pastor and both were excellent. The cabeza was soft, juicy, and packed with beefy flavor. The al pastor had the blend of sweet and savory from the marinade but with the crispy bits that were closer to the trompa flame so you had added texture. I wasn't starving by any means but I was tempted to go back and get in line again for another one.
My only nitpick, and it's barely one, is that they really loaded up the vampiro tortilla to the point where you couldn't really pick it up and eat it with your hands at first. We needed a fork to clear off the top layers and by the time you got near the middle, all the juices had made the tortilla softer and it was beginning to fall apart.
Both vampiros: 9/10
2) A week later, we were at Evil Cooks again (it's less than 10 minutes away) and for once, I decided to try the Asesino which is pulpo + al pastor. I've had both their pulpo and al pastor tacos, separately, in the past but this was the first time I had it as a combo and…it was good but I didn't think the combo was better than just either protein by itself. Regardless, their sauces and toppings really bring the flavor so even if I wasn't blown away by the combo here, it was still a delicious bunch 'o bites. 8/10
And, as usual, I also got their lengua taco (The Simmons) which is just outstanding and one of the singular best tacos in town IMO. 9.5/10
