dad turned on the tank, heard soft whistling/wooshing, thought "huh", lit the grill, and this happened. the full tank vented for about 5 minutes. crazy loud whistling. fire dept arrived soon afterwards. no real damage to the house or people, thankfully.

The hose was ~15 years old.

Fire extinguishers would have helped. But look on the bright side. It got cleaned really well. Replace hose and throw a steak on.

  2. Brilliant-Advisor958

If your tank is exposed , the sun’s UV rays can wreak havoc on your hoses.

I had this happen once on a grill that didn’t have a cabinet . The hose was so brittle and cracked.

I misread the title at first and thought you typed “the house should be replaced every 5 years” – glad everyone is OK.

  4. dumbledwarves

You could make a mean sear on a steak with that grill.

  5. SCVorthos

Ah, You didn’t click the tongs twice before starting I see……

but bad luck mate, excuse for a bigger grill

Did that to my in-laws house on Christmas Day back 10 or 15 years ago. Wasn’t the hose but instead the shelf above the tank collapsed and severed the hose. Fun times.

I think the actual lesson here is, if you hear propane leaking don’t go “huh” and light it up anyway

That is terrifying. I am so glad everyone is okay. Sorry about the grill, honestly least of the worries for the day.

  10. Shoot, my Genesis Silver C’s hose may be from 2000. I need to see if there are date codes on the regulator or hose itself, sort of like the DOT on a car’s tire.

At least it’s not on a wood deck or under an eve. I had a neighbor that put his grill against the vinyl siding of his house and melted the side of his house. 🤣🤣

  12. fuzzusmaximus

Welp, add that to the list of stuff to pick up

  13. thelowbrassmaster

There we go, that’s how you get a proper sear.

  14. ORANGENBLACK101214

This is why Sims shouldn’t own a grill at cooking level 1

  15. CozyGlowStoves

Glad you are all okay. This is a good example of why grilling safety is important. At the end of the day you’re still handling fire. Could have ended way worse.

  16. I did this once. Got the tongs. Clicked them twice. Grabbed the steak off. Burnt some arm hair..Got the extinguisher. Put out fire. Unhooked the tank (with gloves) finished steak cast iron. Mine was not as bad as this though. Just started when I caught it.

Just glad the house (or tree and then house) didn’t go up in flames too!

  18. MUF-DVR1979

    He had a plan!! (;
Let us know how much he LOVES his new one!!!!
    Glad everyone’s ok though
    Been there. Scary for sure

  19. So… your saying that I should probably just toss my grill and replace it… or just toss it because I really don’t use it ever… maybe a new one will encourage me to actually use it…

    (Beavis) FIRE, FIRE! YEAAAAAHHHHHHHH! Mmmeheheheheh

  21. Bob_12_Pack

I thought the OPD valves were supposed to prevent this. Looks like there could have been some other fuel like grease contributing to this fire.

  22. I’ll never own anything but a Weber again for this and many other reasons

  23. TactlessBoard

Well, at least pops get to go shopping for a new grill. Life is nothing but a series of grills you’ll own, and significant haircuts.

  24. TravelinglightOWTF

Good thing your house is made of asbestos.

  25. Bullitt420

When was the last time your grill had been cleaned prior to the fire?

  26. bloozestringer

I had a regulator go bad on a Weber and the whole thing went up in flames. Luckily got it put out but kept waiting for the tank to explode.

  27. whoeatscheese

Definitely the cover of a Midwest Emo album.

  28. el_smurfo

My current grill was free. It’s a Weber Genesis my neighbor gave me because it stopped working. They built it with the regulator hose touching the firebox and it melted and didn’t work anymore.

  29. tiskrisktisk

My hose starts failing before we get to this point.

I read the title as “house should be replaced every 5 years” and thought “that’s a rather dramatic way of going about it”.  Glad nobody got hurt and minimal damage.

  31. It happened to my neighbor last year.. same issue, same result. I happened to be walking by right between our houses when it happened so between my fire extinguisher and his wife’s we put him and it out really fast. He only had very minor burns but it was scary as hell.
