I left town for a couple of weeks. Fired the egg up and when I had it open a little piece of char fell and I looked at the inside of the top and found this.
Why is this happening? How do I prevent that in the future?

Thats carbon build up from cooking. Its normal. Scrape it off and cook on.

Just normal build up. Looks like you need to clean with a nylon brush or an Al foil ball.

Every spring when I pressure wash my back patio I use the pressure washer to clean inside the BGE lid as well. Carbon comes right off.
