A fence isn't in the cards for this season. Any deterrents suggested?

That’s a serious fatty.

Just shot my second one last night. Get yourself a .22

An electric fence might help. We had a solar powered one and it worked wonders. Easy to install.

What is that thing? Looks like a cross between a raccoon, a squirrel and a stick of butter.

Jail! Jail for thievery!

We’ve tried everything. The only thing we’ve found that works is to trap them. You can then look into relocating…. or other less friendly alternatives.

I am using bird/animal netting. Which they are getting through. Or rather under. I’m growing in mostly grow bags and have the netting tucked under the bags. It was working fine until this past week.

Haha. You even set the table for him.

.22 LR. Neighbors will think it was a firework. Get rid of it for good. Borrow one from a friend, im sure you can find one to borrow for a night.

But didn’t you build it for him?

They love brassicas but don’t mess with nightshades.

I’ve had luck using a deer and rabbit repellent spray. I don’t think it would work in all cases but if they can find other food options it might make those more enticing to them than rummaging through your garden.
Also on a side note my garden is fully fenced and sometimes they still can tunnel in so if you do build one you might consider digging down to bury some chicken wire to prevent that.

If not buffet why buffet shaped?

Let me know when you figure that one out. Those little f***ers are determined.

Fence made out of chicken wire, posts, and zip ties will take like half a day to put up and not cost much

Beautiful produce sectio- I mean garden, OP.
GrimmSpeed2768
genuine question why isn’t a fence in the cards?? i recently built one out of chicken wire and those cheap 6ft plastic posts for my vegetable bed that the local rabbits, raccoons, and squirrels were destroying. it ain’t the prettiest but it gets the job done and was cost efficient.

Currently at war with my own fat groundhog, and unfortunately it’s a smart one. It knows better than to walk into the trap. It knows to stay to the side of the yard that isn’t visible from the house. It found the one area of fencing that was only a single layer of fence, tried to get through it, and then just went under. It’s pushed bricks and rocks out of the way, and dug through loads of gravel.
I love him. I grow way to much veggies for my family and I end up having to give majority of it away. I would definitely leave out food for him myself and enjoy watching him. I am curious if he could get into my beds though. They are 3 ft high so I don’t have to bend as much.
We have a fat boy groundhog too. He’s been living under our next door neighbor’s shed for a couple years, but prefers our wild backyard.
We have an agreement, punctuated by liberal doses of coyote urine. He gets the backyard, with its massive amounts of dandelions, clover, burdock, and other tasty greens. Our massive container garden in the front uard, including carrots, watermelon, tomatoes and strawberries, is off limits.
TLDR: Buy coyote urine and spray it regularly around your garden. No issues so far and it’s been 3 years.

My resident groundhog found a boyfriend and had two babies. I had a fence around my garden bed, but she still got into it. I did give her a firm lecture about it as soon as I caught her going in. She hasn’t gone back into the beds ever since. She’s very content eating my grass and my marigolds.
I did have luck one year that I used a haveaheart trap, removed an adult and child and relocated them.

I used to have this huge groundhog that would come over and eat everything out of my yard. My parents apartment shares the yard and they got a dog. Everyday she goes out and runs straight into both sides of the fence where the critter runs are into the pickers. Haven’t had an issue since with the groundhogs. Puppy patrol keeping them at bay 😆

Aw I built a similar one for some local bunnies! No ideas here.

Ok but he looks so excited that’s adorable.

But he is so cute !

Have you planted anything else that they could have? We have planted ours pretty much their own garden and they stay out of ours. You’ve created a beautiful buffet for them in an area that doesn’t look like there are a lot of options. Sometimes they are just looking for juicy foods for the water content. Can you place a pan of water or something away from the garden and see if that helps distract them?
Also, strangely, the ones near us despise sage. I don’t know if its all groundhogs or just the ones near us.

I’ve had decent success with my motion activated sprinkler.

Maybe garlic powder(not garlic salt)? It works to keep bunnies away from my flower garden.

You only threw this party for him , only threw this party for him. For him , for him

Pellet gun usually works good for me. I bought some poly wire at the feed store that I plan on running low around my garden beds and hooking up to the electric netting around my chickens to try and keep them out, but I’ve only seen 2 this year and they haven’t stuck around long
Mode-Reed
Ooh, may I ask where you got your beds from? They look good and sturdy and I’m in the market for some raised beds.
Mindhir
I bought some plant covers from amazon, for my pepper and tomatoe plants…. but my problems are the deers. You have to understabd that your garden is a reliable source of food for him/her… so she/he will be back… I hope it doesnt make as much damage as deers do

In Idaho, we have their cousins, rock chucks – but here, the ground squirrels and voles are the worst!
Definitely saw his shadow.
What a little chonk!
What kind of beds are those? I’m putting in more raised ones, so I’m looking at color & shape options
Like walking up to the all you can eat Buffett!
That’s a big one!
