After visiting Carm’s yesterday, I decided to visit their neighbor across the street for the first time.
Got myself a Wise Guy, 8”. Proscuittini, Capicola, Genoa Salami & Provolone (dressed with mayo, lettuce, tomato, onions and hot giardinera)

Holy smokes, what a great sandwich! Staff was friendly and service was quick. I hear the beef here is great so that’ll be for next time. I’m also intrigued by that 3’ meatball sub challenge. 🏆

Which do I think is better, Fontano’s or Carm’s?
I think there’s enough room in this neighborhood and this city for both; not everything has to be a competition. In a city with plenty of Potbelly’s and Portillo’s, it’s the family owned and operated spots that win and deserve my patronage. Mangia bene! 🇮🇹

Grab some meatballs at Fontano’s to snack on later.

  2. My favorite sub shop in the city. Great choice.

Just be careful! Everything at Fontanos includes mayo and mustard (I know it’s clearly posted), has caught me off guard more than once.

Kept me fed during my time at UIC. That and Carms across the street.

  5. That looks incredible. Any difference between this location and the one in the loop? Aside from the pizza.

If you have the ability to travel, please please go to Alpine Subs in Elmwood Park. It’s a few doors down from Johnnie’s (the best Italian beef you can get)

But if you are already aware, then disregard 🙂

  7. There used to be one in Naperville but it closed years ago. Have yet to find a place in the area with subs anywhere near as good.

  8. It’s the best sub shop in the city. Blockbuster >>

East Coaster here and to me The Roll makes or breaks it and Costanzos from Philadelphia is the best unless a place is doing local fresh baked

  10. being completely honest the wise guy is my favorite sandwich – period, chicago or otherwise. always been a big fontano’s fan and love to see others appreciate them!

Looks great. Is this the same as the one in hinsdale? Looks like there’s a few locations

Fontano’s is the only one of the major Italian delis that hinge cuts their subs. Seems like a small detail but it makes a big difference in eatability and ingredient spillage. Also their giard does not fuck around.

  15. My best buddy lived on the 2nd floor above Fantanos in that apartment complex for years. The amount of roaches I’ve seen in that building still gives me the chills.

Still a damn good sub though.

The Caputo is the pick. Do it. You’re worth it.
