A cookbook by Elmarie Berry, originally from Bloemfontein and now based in the Western Cape, has won a top international honour at the Gourmand Awards. Her book The Table was named Best Mediterranean Cuisine Book in the World.

Berry, a food stylist, photographer and author, described the recognition as deeply emotional and humbling. “The Table was born from a very personal place inspired by family, heritage and my passion for bringing people together,” she said. “Personally it feels like a tribute to my grandmother and mother and all the women who have cooked before me. Professionally it is a dream come true.”

Berry’s culinary style blends her Lebanese and South African heritage. She said her grandmother taught her to embrace bold, honest flavours, while her South African upbringing gave her an appreciation for comfort and connection through cooking. “The recipes are the ones I cook often for family and friends. They bring joy, nourish and encourage conversation,” she said.

Berry said The Table was created during a difficult time in her life. Her father passed away while the book was being produced. “It was incredibly difficult to continue, but in many ways it gave the project deeper meaning. My dad was one of my biggest supporters and finishing the book felt like a way of honouring his memory.”

Berry is currently working on her third cookbook and recently launched a tableware range inspired by her love for warm, welcoming hosting. She said the award opens doors to reach a wider audience and encourages her to continue telling stories rooted in home, heart and flavour.
