A mid-Michigan-based burger chain known for its signature burgers is opening in metro Detroit.
Halo Burger, frequented by travelers in mid-Michigan who are heading Up North from metro Detroit, will soon open a location in Macomb County’s Clinton Township.
A Facebook post by Halo Burger in a group for Clinton Township residents reads: “Clinton Twp, are you ready?”
A Google search shows a Clinton Township location at 41554 Garfield Road, between 18 Mile and Canal roads. This location marks the chain’s sixth Michigan location. Halo Burger has four locations in the Flint area and one in Birch Run.
At one time, the chain had more than a dozen restaurants, including locations in Oakland County.
Achille Di Nello, CEO and owner of Halo Burger, who recently acquired the chain, told the Free Press that Clinton Township is set for a June 30 opening.
“This is the only one in the metro Detroit area,” Di Nello said, “but there are plans to expand to more locations in metro Detroit.”
Halo Burgers is known for burgers that have a char and have “the works” of fresh-cut tomatoes, lettuce, onion, pickle, ketchup, mustard and mayonnaise.
Originally called Kewpee, Halo Burger got its start in 1923, serving its hamburgers in downtown Flint out of a “boxcar”-style wagon. It’s one of the oldest hamburger chains in the United States.
A cow head with a halo has been the brand’s logo since 1960. The chain employs more than 100 people across its five-store footprint, with most stores in the Flint area.
With a focus on its Midwest roots, unique to the Halo Burger menu is its Flint coney with Flint-based Koegel hot dogs, serving Vernors pop (including a famed Boston Cooler) and Wisconsin cheese curds.More recently, Cops and Doughnuts, a popular doughnut chain based in Clare, Michigan, merged with Halo Burger, which is now based in Burton.
