2021 Bonnet-Cotton Côte de Brouilly Les Grillés

Run by the young Pierre Cotton, the Cotton family has been producing wine from the same cellar since 1856, but it seems that Pierre had to reclaim the vineyards which he currently uses. His wife, viticulturist Marine Bonnet, became his official partner some five years ago, and the label changed to Bonnet-Cotton.

Their wine is always wild and unrestrained, but this bottle in particular, sourced from a plot adjacent to the winery which became Cotton's first single-vineyard wine, is usually their most expressive. Grown on a combination of red, pink, and yellow granite, it's vinified whole-bunch semi-carbonic and aged in centuries-old foudre that were originally used for beer.

Beautiful and expressive nose, violet, crushed blueberry, smoked pork, sandalwood, and asian spices. Slight spritz, M+ acidity and soft, light tannins. Savory palate, oyster mushroom, cranberry, and dark soil, finishing medium on mineral notes. Very nice – purchased for $40 in 2023.
