Was in Denver for the weekend and hit up Beckon. Overall I enjoyed the dinner, everything was good, well presented, great plating. They had some interesting things on the menu which could turn into some great and unique dishes, though some just don't quite hit the mark at 100% yet.
Firstly, and this is just pure personal preference, I really don't enjoy the round table style of dining that a lot of restaurants have transitioned to. I'm a natural introvert and having to sit next to strangers and have servers I can't see reaching over my shoulder just generally lessens any experience for me. But, you know, it is what it is.
I thought the "Turnip waffle" was a really excellent bite to start. Delicious and different, great starter.
The fish plates were very good, but also very fishy. I don't mind that but I could see some not enjoying it as much.
They served a custard dish before the cod which I felt was a unique dish, I hadn't had anything quite like it before, and it was good – but just not quite there yet. Something was missing, but I think it was a good example of this restaurant working on something creative that over time could become a really great dish.
The quinoa dish was really excellent and I also thought pretty unique. (If you haven't noticed yet I place a premium on unique dishes at Michelin places, what does this restaurant serve that I can't get anywhere else?). This felt like a more mature dish than the custard, and could have probably fit in at most any other michelin restaurant I've eaten as far as quality of taste. Really enjoyed that dish.
The savory dishes were excellent, but didn't feel like there was anything there I couldn't get at any other quality fine djnnng restaurant. To be fair, I think it's challenging to do a whole lot of new stuff with savory courses, and the presentation and taste were excellent.
Desert courses were very good. They served sake with one of the deserts which, again, I thought was interesting and creative but just didn't fully hit the mark for me. They ended the night with a chocolate cake with gold leaf, I didn't really care about the gold leaf but the cake was 10/10 excellent.
They did offer a wagyu supplement that I declined. I'm sure it's great but my thoughts on supplements in general is that if it's not good enough to be on the actual menu then it's probably not good enough for me to drop an extra $100 on.
Overall, solid experience, haven't had any other Michelin restaurants in Denver so couldn't make a recommendation on this place over the others. Worth checking out if you're in town, IMO.
