Could you do this on a L? Yes, but the space is so nice to have an easy to make a half direct / half indirect cooking area with the wide fire grate

    You must be new here? Trying to shame people who don’t have an XL? Rookie mistake. BGE is one big community regardless of size. Say you’re sorry and give us 10 hail eggs and you will be forgiven for your ignorance. FYI I’ve had a L and have never regretted it. Sometimes you just have to use your brain and plan ahead.
