From the legendary Vigna Francia, the iconic vineyard where also Monfortino comes from, this barolo is the best expression of what Serralunga D’Alba barolos can offer. In this wine you can experience what Giacomo Conterno’s legacy represents, specially in this vintage, where tradition meets precision in a product of remarkable focus and depth.
To the nose its strikingly pure, with notes of crushed cherries, rose petals, orange peel, cedar and hints of iron that rise from the glass very elegantly. There’s also a whisper of earth, tipical of wines from serralunga d’alba, and a subtle balsamic edge, layered beneath the floral lift.
The tannins are sculpted and perfectly integrated, present but never aggressive, wrapped in a robe of bright acidity and tension. Notes of red berries, dried herbs, and blood orange that you can catch to the nose unfold slowly and beautifully.
Iconic wine with great aging potential

2020 is not my favorite Barolo vintage, certainly not compared to 16/19/21, but I’ll gladly drink any vintage of Francia, or any G Conterno Barolo. I’ve found 2020 generally to be a bit too diffuse, too purple fruited, and lacking a bit of real edge. As a tradeoff, the wines are rather easy and show very well young. Pleasant, fun, if not all that Barolo can be. I’ve not had anything at this level from the vintage, but have had enough to understand the general vintage character. Too rich for my blood at these prices, I’ll rely on the kindness of others and hope to find a taste.
I love the other wine in this pic. Love I Sodi Di San Niccolò. Very underrated wine
Oh man, I’m looking at that castellare in the background.
You have plans for the barolo? A few more years I assume?
