Hi All,

I am just getting started and fired my Kamado Joe Classic for the first time. (This morning I put in on full blast for 2-3 hours) and this afternoon I tried grilling some burgers on it.

After it’s cooled down again I noticed a lot of smoke remains on the top part.
I can wipe it off easily with a cloth of my BBQ glove, however I am in doubt if all these remains are good or bad.

No, you aren’t doing anything wrong, that’s completely normal. You can just leave it on there, it won’t hurt anything. The top of your lid is going to be black from carbon buildup no matter what you do, you’re burning carbon inside of it for a heat source.

Give it a clean off maybe once a year to get the excess buildup off of it.

It’ll last. I remember the first year I had mildew/mold in the bowl. Kamodo recommendation? Burn it and then use it like normal

Haha nah this is gonna get so sullied. Couple cooks in it’s gonna be fully black inside. Same with the grates they won’t stay shiny for too long.

    It’s grill seasoning, embrace it

You should have taken a picture of it before you started using it. It will never look so clean ever again.

You do have your half grates in wrong though. The little nubs at the left and right of the D&C rack go between the racks, not in the middle.

I just want to point out that if you rotate your rack 90degrees, your half grates will sit with the stoppers in the right place. Notice the little stopper that goes through your grate on the left hand side on your picture, this is supposed to go between two halves.

Yeah you’re not bbqing enough! My dude, my 18year old BGE had later upon later of greasy blackened crud inside it that I didn’t need to use wood chunks anymore: the residue gave the bbq all its flavor!

If you can wipe it like dust – did you use briquettes? It is recommended to use pure charcoal lump instead. My kamado lid has turned darker every time (as expected) as well, but it‘s a solid patina.
