A new Italian restaurant could be coming to a borough town after plans were submitted to combine two adjoining shops.

Capri, a new venture by the owner of San Marino in Belmont, will replace the currently closed La Vita Coffee and The Chippy under the proposals.

The former coffee shop and chip shop in Market Street, Westhoughton, would be merged into one, with the wall between them knocked down.

The proposed opening hours for the restaurant will be 9am to 2.30pm and 5pm to 11pm on Monday to Friday and 10am to 11pm on Saturday and Sunday.

La Vita Coffee and The Chippy on Market Street (Image: Google Maps) Haziz Berisha, the owner of San Marino, said that the reaction from locals so far has been “really positive”.

He said: “It’s good – all the comments so far have been really positive.

“They all have really positive feedback so I’m 90 per cent sure it’s going to work.”

The restaurant would be open for breakfast, lunch and dinner – with a focus on breakfast – like the business’ other restaurant CIBO, in Egerton.

A canopy extending to the edge of the pavement has also been proposed – along with an access ramp.

Cllr David Wilkinson, of Westhoughton South, said that he supports the plan and cannot see an issue with it.

He said: “The plan is to knock it through and make a bigger premises, and of course it’s going to have disabled access – which is needed because both buildings were quite high off the ground.

“Both were previously food related, so I can see no problem with it – hopefully it will be successful.

“In the town centre we have a number of food places – but we have lost some – we have gained some over the years but we have also lost some over time.”

A decision on whether to grant planning permission for the restaurant and the changes to the building is set to be made at the next planning committee meeting.
