A house me and my wife just closed on has this really unique grill built into a chimney or something

It seems to use the same structure as the interior fireplace, but has a completely separate exit and a separate floor, so the normal fire hazard concerns are sidestepped

But this thing looks quite old and hasn't been maintained in a while

I'm also not sure what the chamber on the right is for, or why there's an electrical outlet in there

Is this thing worth revitalizing and if so, how should I go about it?

I would 100% get that back in service, I would start by firing it up and seeing what cleans itself and how it works to make sure there are no leaks. Electrical could be anything even an electric coal/log starter but maybe someone here will know.

Congrats on the house and the unique back yard BBQ!

Yes please, you can almost everything in it.

We have these grills on brick and mortar in south of Brazil. These things are great and this one in particular is a beauty! Revive it!

May want to get the chimney inspected to see if its in good condition, wouldnt want a fire in the chimney against the house like that.

Look up Brazilian and Argentinian home BBQs. This is the best and most rewarding way to grill. not only that but you can cook a MEAN feijoada on that badboy!

I say fire it up ! But yeah definitely find out about the electrical outlet first maybe it’s just for wood storage. Man if I had that I’d have no hair left on my arms from reaching in to flip the meats that calls for a long cast iron meat fork ! Congrats on the house with the bonus grill.

Fire it up!! The other chamber does look like a wood storage to keep it dry. The outlet is useful, but not sure other than lighting and igniting the wood (not all in that space though). I want to do an outdoor smoker and grill similar, but not attached to my home. Also, replace that grate. It doesn’t look level to get a consistent cook on your steaks.

Maybe the electric outlet could power a rotisserie.

I vote for a beer fridge in the space with the outlet! 🍻

That looks awesome! I would get that back into working order asap.

I grew up with a homemade pit like this. I crave the meat that used to come off of it. I’m getting close, but something about the large oven and thermal mass (is my guess), gets it so juicy inside and crispy crunchy outside.

Does the side box connect to the fire box at all? If not then it’s probably just for storage. Electric would be good for a light source

Get a cauldron to make soups, stews, chili in stuff in that thing. Looks like a fun way to cook. You can probably bake some good bread in it.

  16. Yes. For all that is sacred and smokey, yes! My dad’s old house had one. It was incredible. The side box is for smoking fuel. The main area is for grilling fuel and food. The brick makes for an incredible heat wall. The chimney gets the smoke up and out of your face.

As stated, get the chimney inspected and cleaned. If you have a pressure washer, I’d do a deep clean of the inside and replace all the grates. This type is a lover of wood. Charcoal works fine, but wood is king inside this one.

You may want to modernize the coal bed and add a way to adjust the coal height. Other than that, these were awesome designs. I can’t say much about the smoker side. I’m still learning to smoke, but I’ve used the grill side on dad’s old one many times.

My in-laws had one installed inside their house like this.
