I planted seeds this year that were sold as black beauty tomatoes. The pictures on the sellers website showed all black tomatoes. Other pictures of them on google show all black as well. I have three “black beauty” tomato plants growing right now all half black /half green that ripens into red. Are my tomatoes actually black beauty?

They’re blushing. Nirmal tomatoes do this as well. You should be able to take them off of the plant now to finish ripening up off the vine. Put them on your counter, stem side down and they will finish up no problem. You can actually pick them sooner during the “breaker” phase as well to prevent pests or cracking/splitting from happening.

Happy gardening and those are some beautiful tomatoes!

Black beauty will be dark red when ripe and black where the sun shines.

These tomatoes with anthocyanin expression on the skin turn purple/blue/black where they get lots of sun exposure. Think of it like a suntan.

i stopped growing technicolor tomatoes like that specifically because of how much of a pain it is to identify ripening stages. well that and the general issue with blight. they look great, something i’d want in a bowl of fruit for a painting, but i’ve never found their taste that superior to any other home grown tomato.

That doesn’t sound like true Black Beauty. They’re usually deep black all over when ripe. Maybe it’s a different dark tomato variety? Seed mix-ups happen!
