I’m collecting ramen recs for an upcoming trip, and I want to hear from YOU.
Where was the most unforgettable bowl you’ve had in Japan?
Could be a famous chain or a hole-in-the-wall in some quiet alley. Drop the name + city if you remember!

This graphic not including Fukuoka is kinda insane. That said the best ramen I had is in Okayama, it’s called Happo. Shoyu-Tonkotsu broth.
The best ramen I had in my life was actually in LA. There’s a small hole in the wall called Foo Foo Tei that serves seafood champon with mussels, shrimp, fish balls, and a wide variety of seafood in the classic white broth.
I like my noodle soups to have a wide variety of vegetables, meats, and seafood, though mainstream ramen tends to be more simplistic.
Tokyo, ramen stand, stood to eat, 1979.
Tsuruichiya, in an alley near Yokohama station
Hakata station, Fukuoka. Downstairs in the L-shaped food passage. Can’t remember its name, hopefully somebody else knows it.
Tsukemen Kirari near Gekeikan brewery in Kyoto. Simple and outstanding.
Some rando shop going up to Nakano Broadway. Never had better.
Kura in Sapporo!
I always plug for tsukemen enji in kichijoji
Most memorable ones for me were Onomichi style ramen at Tani or Maruboshi, and Tsukemen at Ginjo ramen Kubota (Kyoto) and Niboshi Chuka soba Suzuran in (Shinjuku).
Shio Tamen in Takasaki
Kyushu and okayama
Kikanbo in Kanda, Tokyo.
Ramen Nagi, 2am, Golden Gai. It’s at the top of the short list of places I will absolutely return to in Tokyo.
Edit: I forgot about Bokkoshi in Osaka! Super rich Peitan that’s infused with the grilling charcoal if you’d like. Makes for a great smoky bowl! Don’t miss it!
Kumamoto is my underrated pick, especially for garlic lovers. Check out basement places off the shimotori shotengai..
A hole in the wall near the train station in Niigata. Great assari shoyu ramen. It’s the polar opposite of the rich Hakata style rich tonkotsu ramen and I like it so much better.
Isono kazuo in Sapporo for me!
well- since I only lived in Okinawa for about 3 years in the 80s….. my answer is Okinawa
No Fukuoka?
天外天 in Kumamoto
No love for Osaka???
I suggest [Ramen MAIKAGURA](https://maps.app.goo.gl/cJCYsxqrCkf8Wso46?g_st=ipc) near Chitose-Funabashi, Setagaya Ward, Tokyo, because I tried their summer seasonal special “Soy Milk Cold Ramen”. I really love how the rich soy milk pairs nicely with their homemade chili oil.
