I just grilled them this morning. I used the charcoal grill with a chimney starter. But I feel like the heat was too high. I should've put less charcoal in next time

Make sure to have a hot and cool zone, put all the coals on one side of the grill so that you can move the burgers off heat if it’s getting too hot or flaring up.
I usually do mine 3-5 minutes per side on the hot zone, then move them to the cool zone and throw cheese on them. I’m far from an expert though and have seen people say they do the opposite, cool zone first, then sear on the hot side.

Great job man, you killed it for your first time, ive seen “experienced” grillers not do this well. Question…is your burger patty just meat? Some bread crumbs, Montreal steak seasoning, whatsthathere sauce isn’t a bad starting spot. One of my kids loves ranch so I make a little ranch powder with salt and pepper in hers.
The other person nailed it with the temperature zones. If you dont already have a chimney to start coals, get one and throw out your starter fluid.

Sear one for a few minutes over direct heat , each side then move to indirect heat

They look a little dry, but otherwise great start. I’d eat them.

I’ve been grilling for 40 years, and last week I had a flare up and a batch of burgers got a little…toasty. They were still good, though.
Did you/your family enjoy them? That’s what counts!
But yeah, get better cheese.

Good for your first try! This video helped me make better burgers. You want high heat but the trick is to keep the burgers off the direct heat until it’s time to sear. https://youtu.be/ywzGmKJDjhk?si=ZgJ5NBp0jCNgELbU

Did you toast your buns sir?

They look over done. If you’re going high heat, then you should do a smash burger, or something thin. If you’re doing a thicker burger, you want more of an indirect heat, or a more rare burger. But you can’t do too high heat on a thicker patty or you’ll burn the outside before the inside is done.
You should also toast your buns. That’s the smallest, easiest thing that makes a big difference.

First time? Spending too much time on the roller coasters. 🎢. Keep trying. You’ll get a rhythm down fast enough
